So, not at all dependent on the server we choose, we could start talking about classes we're interested in playing. I don't believe we have to have an even spread or really worry about who is playing what, but it could make for a strange game if we're all playing Undead Mages. ;)

So, what're you thinking about playing?

Mage, Priest or Shaman for me although I need to do some research before I decide (I need to read up on what the classes actually do). I'm happy enough to be party healer if needs be as thats a role I tend to play a lot. But I'm also tempted by mage after my elementalist experience in Guild Wars :)

The main two we will definetly need is Warrior and Priest. But I'm tempted to be a Tauren Druid, I tried one before but never got it very high. I tend to like being a jack of all trades/ support think that's why I like the Paladin I have.

Not too pushed. Although, I'd rather not do Hunter as that is my main.

The main two we will definetly need is Warrior and Priest.

I usually think of it in terms of battle roles. I've got the WoW Strategy Guide and it describes the following roles, and suggests classes that can fulfill them:

Tank (Defensive Warrior, Paladin, Druid)

"Tanks are meant to consolidate enemies (bringing them together onto a single target)".

DPS (Mage, Rogue)

"This person's duty is to knock down enemies quickly and prevent them from harming the party".

Healer (Priest, Shaman, Druid)

"Healers extend the length of time a group can survive in a battle; they also decrease downtime between battles".

Hybrid (Druid, Battle/Berzerk Warrior, Paladin, Shaman)

"[These] classes can fill several roles in the group... Because character with several roles are versatile by nature, two such members can backup all three characters of the primary group [i.e. Tank, DPS, Healer]".

Wild Cards (Hunter, Warlock)

"Pet classes often have support abilities that don't evenly fall into the tree main categories... [These classes] have abilities that raise a group's potential to survive and thwart enemies."

(Roles, suggested classes and quotes all from the WoW Strategy Guide.)

It seems a fairly useful way of approaching group makeup, but we should bear in mind that we often won't have all of us on at the same time and so even if we try to plan for full coverage it won't come together just now. Well, unless we're all building up multiple characters, of course... :)

Yup thats what the strategy says, but general opinion is without a warrior and priest the later small group dungeons are unplayable.... thats if we get that far :)

I figure that we can do this first pass "what are you interested in" type polls and then, in a few days, go for the "so, what are you actually going to play" discussion.

Which ones are you thinking?

They changed Scholomance to a 5 man dungeon in 1.1 and folks were saying it was pretty hardcore if you didn't have the basis of a warrior and priest. Then again this is when you are lvl 60 I was just trying to make things easier from the start :)

OK, well I've voted in the poll, although I know precious little about the game - I've not played it at all, or even seen it in action really. That said, I think that I'd prefer to go for a Hunter, as one of the (main) reasons I'm buying this is that I like having pets! The other option for me is a Warrior, as I've just about perfected the art of running up to things and hitting them (just ask Haven!).

Warlocks also get pets, just so you know. However, Warlock pets are conjured beasts that really don't develop a whole lot, where Hunter pets grow alongside the Hunter and are much more customisable (name, skills, Hunter's Beastmastery, etc).

well theres a lot of pets possible inc birds, cockroaches, lizards, battle chickens, dragon whelps and mechanical dragonlings even a mechanical squirrel. :)

looks like a nice spread of classes there, but no warlocks... I may give one a try though!
