Is it a message from Paypal, or from THN?

It's definitely a message from THN, it's generated as a reminder that the subscription is going to be taken. As for whether it can be disabled as a user preference, I'm not sure tbh.

No way to disable these per user, unfortunately. They are from THN and their frequency feels quite random, to me.

I wonder if my spam filter is somehow killing these emails, then? I really don't remember ever seeing such an email...

Nope, it's telling me it's expiring not that it's about to be taken. That said, it seems to have stopped happening randomly.. so.. nevermind then!
