But it's very, very special. If you're like me, and you like to keep up with funky goings on in the world of audio/visual entertainment, it really shouldn't surprise you to hear that Sony are (finally) releasing the first television based on OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology.

Though small and expensive now, this is (hopefully) the start of the next stage of television evolution. Think of it as the next big step. Almost as big as CRT to LCD/Plasma was. But bigger.

Oh yeah, the screen is only 3mm thick ;)

it may be 3mm thick, it may be very shiny and i may want one, but the lifespan is only 30,000 hours, which is fine if it's just for the office or just for home use but when you use your machine for 16-18 hours a day during the week that quickly drops the life to less than 5 years. if they can add 50% to the lifespan then i'll consider it but until then i think i'll stick with my crt\new lcd

Indeed. Though remember that this is the first (commercial) generation of these. Hopefully three things will happen: they will make bigger versions (42"+); they will find ways to cut the production cost (a lot); they will improve the life span. All of these happened with LCD and plasma technologies, so I don't see it being a problem. Just have to wait 2-3 years :)
