[Tech] 64bit OS

Yo peeps!
I'm in need of some technical help and I totally have absolute faith in you technomancers.

I have a dual core processor and 4 gigs of RAM. I also have a legal copy of WinXP Home.

I've come to a point where I fancy reinstalling my OS and I'm wondering - should I stick to the WinXP I have or try and get my hands on Vista 64bit?

Having tried Vista a while back I don't really like that OS, the security system bugging me all the time, me being unable to find things (settings, programs etc.) and I know there's a fuckton of problems with it, things crashing etc. On the other hand it could make use of my dual-core and my whole RAM and it's got some cool features.

So I'm basically asking you - will my stuff run faster if I get the 64bit OS, or will it be comparable? Are WinVista really as bad as I think they are?

You see, I'd go for Linux or whatnot, but then I'd have to learn a whole lot of stuff and my gaming and other compatibility would go down the tubes, so that's a no-go for me.

So, stick with legal XP? Go for pirated 64bit Vista? Do something crazy? Get a Mac?

Tell me!

Cheers,
Angelic

Wait for Windows 7 (*should* be out later this year) and get the 64-bit version of that...

That bit you can turn off. UAC (User Account Control) annoys the hell out of me too but turned off a Vista system seems to run mostly like XP but with few things moved about and a few additional features here and there.

I've gone for 64bit XP Pro. It's like XP, which I like. Except that few manufacturers provide 64bit drivers, and those that do don't support them as much. ANd you can't always use the 32bit drivers on the 64bit environment. This, I hate. And actually makes me hate 64bit computing a lot. If everyone went over to 64bit it would be fine, but the percentage of 64bit users is still low enough to not warrant giving it full support.

The worse trouble I had was my usb wireless adapter. The 64bit drivers were "coming soon" for a period of 6-7 months, and still weren't released last time I checked. I hated it. So I'd look into that before hand, if I were you.

As for Linux, gaming support is actually pretty decent for it now. All the "big" games have been running under WINE for a while, so I wouldn't worry too much...

Still, your call.

Right. I've been goofing around Win7 64bit for some two hours now and I don't like it. It might be just caused by me not being used to them and preferring the good old ways, but still... Think I'm gonna give them a couple more hours of usage and then decide if I'll keep them.

The change from XP to Vista/W7 will take you a while to get used to - like anything, it's different to the previous version. If you already have Vista then getting W7 won't be too much of a shock to you.

There are alot of very handy "little things" that W7 has over XP, and once all of the compatibility issues are ironed out I really think that it will be THE operating system to have....
