A few days ago I was getting frustrated because I only have one monitor. I wanted to read a very long pdf file while also being able to reference another application at the same time. Now I COULD have just resized the windows myself and put then side-by-side, but that normally means you have some unused space and its awkward getting it just right.
So then I started looking for a program that I could use to easily split my monitor into two windows that I could easily put different windows into so that they are side-by side - And I found Gridmove.
This is a very small application that allows you to split your desktop into a grid, however you like it (I am just using a basic Vertical split configuration atm). You can then drag any application window into any of the grid areas that you have defined and it will then automatically resize that window to the size of the grid area you have defined.
It comes with a number of supplied configurations and is also completely customizable and multi-monitor aware too!
The easiest way to use it is to middle-click drag your window into one of the grid areas. It then overlays a whiteish box in the grid area that you have defined - letting you know how big the window will be when it is resized.
I haven't had a go at making my own configuration yet but I am perfectly happy with the 2-way vertical split configuration at the moment.
I have tried this on both XP Pro and Vista, and (believe it or not) it works perfectly on Vista, but to get it to work on my main XP Pro PC I had to change the program's compaitibility settings to disable the advanced text services for that program.
Some of you who frequently have multiple windows open may find this useful, even if you have multiple monitors so give it a try
