Alien Swarm

Since it looks like a few folks are giving this a look right now, I figured I'd post up some info and general tips for anyone else who wants to get involved.

First of all, ASw is a UT2004 mod. A (real time) top-down shooter with a definite Alien theme. The game focuses more on small squads and tactical movement, rather than full-on carnage. The files you'll need for the base game are here. Most servers are running all the maps from here as well, so if you're looking to play online they're a good download.

Once you're playing, here's some basics:
  • The game is hard. Don't be ashamed to play on easy, especially if you're trying it out single player.
  • There's friendly fire, and it hurts a lot. Careful what you're shooting at :D
  • On that note, you'll probably want to avoid the flamer and shotguns until you're quite competent with the other weapons.
  • The autogun isn't affected by the accuracy stat, so don't waste your stars.
  • Everyone should almost always should be putting stars into their special stat at the end of the round, especially the medics and techs.
  • Stims are a lifesaver. You'll want at least one marine to bring them.

Cheers for the point about not padding the accuracy stat, D ;).

Could I also add that people called Nanor should stay behind marines firing the big rapid firing death cannon?

I finally got off my lazy ass for a few minutes and looked it up: saving a campaign in progress
Direct quote of the relevant bits:
To save a campaign, type mutate ccsave in the console. You can only save if you are the squad leader, and only when you are in briefing. You only have one slot, and it doesn't ask if you want to overwrite, so be careful!
To later load the campaign, type mutate ccload in the console. This will start a vote to load your campaign. Again, you need to be squadleader to be able to load.

I've saved the campaign we were playing earlier and opened the server back up.

It is my learned opinion that those map packs should be available as a single download damnit

Pest had an installer that had the fully patched game and all maps. Unsure where the hell it went though.

There was a developer e-mail saying he was doing other stuff for the time being :) or was that someone else who was of Blue-origin ...

He's around, just has other priorities. :) He was going to join us the one night, but ironically enough couldn't get Swarm to run :p

So this game is coming onto Steam, tomorrow and for free. Looks shiny and awesome. Yay!

Just wanted to bring some attention to this, with it being free and all, so we could have a game or two :)

Thanks for the very quick game last night Docbot and Nanor... sorry I ran away to Raid :).

Looks good from what we tried so far..... fancy playing it a bit more at some point.

Nice link, which leads me to the following statement:

There's an in-game level editor. That's so awesome. Makes me want to make some levels, indeed...!

Sort of. You can arrange tiles ingame, but tiles themselves need to be created in hammer.
