This is a MMO that has been out for just under a month or so.

A review on the amazon website quotes "if you like wow you will love Rift". It had 16 reviews at the time of writing this, averaging 4.5/5 stars.

According the xfire stats it is 2nd most popular MMO at the minute.

I can help thinking that it is likely to fall by the wayside, as plenty of new MMO games had a healthy following at first, only to fall away.

They don't do a free demo which I don't think helps there cause.

in fact - they are. This very weekend if you have a friend playing RIFT they have been given a code to give to friends so they can try it this weekend. hit me up if you want my code. Also, if u search the forums for RIFT, you should see a number of threads on it - we aren't all on the same server anymore but that doesn't mean we can't share our experiences here :)

I played for about 4 hours or so on Saturday with a free trial key. Got to level 10 (with some quest assistance after hitting 6).
Graphics made me feel a bit sort of sea-sick for some reason.
Only interesting thing I really saw was the multiple "talent" tree concept. Could be potential in there.
Everything else looked like it was trying to hard...
"*** QUEST COMPLETED *** KABOOOM-CHING-BLAM!
"*** LEVEL UP *** KABOOOM-CHING-BLAM!
Yeah, ok, I get it. Chill out, game.

Probably the best of the new breed fantasy MMO so far, though. Looks like they have taken notes from failures such as Conan and Aeon, like/dislikes from WoW and tried to address them all so credit for that, at least.

Can't say I'll be rushing back but I can see it lasting longer than other MMOs.

Thanks for the responses guys. I think I am still interested in this game but am going to wait another 3/4 months to see if the game gathers more momentum. It is still stuck at 7.5% in the pie chart for MMO games played on xfire, so it could go either way.l

I get the impression it is an above average MMO and will def be making Blizzard feel uneasy at the minute.

For the moment.......now where is my next wow time card.....

As an xfire user I have become aware of its decline, with so few users now, its just an op in advertising service now :( - though I have no plans stop using it.
