Anyone preordered TOR?

I was so in love with the concept of TOR till they announced the subscription costs, or even the fact it would have one...

I'd have been genuinely suprised if they hadn't had sub costs attached. MMOs aren't cheap to run, and it really only leaves you with two options; subscription, or micro transactions. And I don't think Star Wars is a franchise where micro transactions would work all that well, at least not without a tremendous amount of extra content added for it (like loads of choices for ship, customised weapons, special cosmetic gear, lightsaber hilts/crystals, etc... actually, that could work...).

Out of interest, what is the sub fee for TOR meant to be? £8.99/month like WoW and Rift and so on?

If any franchise has the establishment of enough content to run Micro Transactions, it's Star Wars. You could have had lighstaber re-colours, harder to get or even unique NPC allies and ships, weapons, armour, craftables, locations and quest packs like D&D Online do (and i quite like).
I really see no need to pay a shop the price of a full game to get a disc for an MMO that then also has a monthly costs.

Saw an article on Eurogamer that seems relevant to this discussion. The suggestion is that F2P also tends to equal low quality and that this will help tip the balance back to subs-based MMOs, though likely not all the way.

I think the argument has some merit, but the vast majority of MMOs now bore me inside the first 15 hours so even the box price is looking high, never mind ancillary costs.

What I'd like to see is a game like TOR having a subscription, but having account creation be free (if you do it online only) but with no free 30 days included when you make your account.

You could then do a collector's edition with lots of extra goodies for, say, £30/£40 that might also include some game time, and then maybe have a DVD version of the game in the shops for a nominal fee (say, £3 or something) that included NO game time.

You could then pay your £8.99 for the first month, see if you like it, and you're then down a max of £12 if you don't like it. If you do, you've got yourself in, and the company will still be making money from you in the long term.

Ooooh thread derailage :D

I'd rather play a decent and polished pay to play game than one of the myriad of average free to play games out there, that aren't really free at all.

To be honest the only free to play mmo I've actually liked so far is everquest 2 extended. And even then you really had to pay if you wanted to play it properly (auction house, etc.)

Anyway so far I have 7 peoples, in my super serious fluffy guild. I'm hoping to see more but guess not many people are even buying the game :D

I am having trouble tryign to spot the pre-order code on my Game receipt ready for it, but cannay wait. Apprently, the number listed as 'Preorder Number' is not the correct one...

And yes, I'd prefer to have a polished, well-maintained pay-to-play game over a F2P mmo, mainly since I have bad memories going from one F2P to another trying to find one I like. Not one P2P game I have played can I truly say I hated, almost all F2P games I can.

I don't think preordering any MMO game is a good idea. It will have loads of issues, the initial release will be pretty much a "General release public test phase". Patches are sure to follow thick and fast.

I am interested in the game but will wait 4-6 months before deciding to try.

But, but how will you get the fattest loots and epic mounts the fastest if you don't start grinding at the hour of release.

The hour of our release draws near.

Erm guys, some of us preorder because we're fucking bored and desperately want a decent new mmo to get our teeths into :p

I don't play enough hours to be the fastest or the first at anything, given I work full time and stuff, but I would like to play asap.

I don't really understand such comments against your own community :p

I like SW, particularly the KOTOR series in generla and have been looking forward to TOR for nigh on 3 years. I don't care about the first to get aceheivements, the phattest loot, the mounts or anything like that. I just want to play the damned game.

And as said by silkth, some of us are bored and in need of something new to play, MMOs are a good way to take up a good chunk of my 'procrastination time'
