Are the dead really dead?

No, not a thread about ghosts, but about a new theory of rescuscitating people who've recently died, for example from heart attacks.

Link.

Kind of a change from the accepted wisdom isn't it?

That's actually quite an interesting article. And yes, very against the way of current thinking. I like it! I also hope it means a lot more people who "die" of heart attacks could be saved.

Actually, the reperfusion damage theory is quite well known (and old). The problem with "taking it slow" in reviving someone would (i think?) be brain damage.

Fair enough. As the article is dated 07/05/2007 (two days from now :S ) I thought it was a fairly recent development. The brain damage aspect is mentioned in the article. It says the patient is hooked up to a bypass machine to keep blood and oxygen flowing to the brain while the heart is gradually restarted.

However this pans out, I find it heartening that this kind of research is bearing fruit (whenever it came out). It's also nice to find a positive article in the media, as opposed to all the "death, war, crime, life sucks" articles that seem to make up the majority of the news these days.
