Average iLev

Is it me or is this bugged? I've only ever upgraded my bits 'n pieces yet sometimes it drops in score! They don't average out ALL the gear in your bags, do they? Cos I carry around two sets, and sometimes random low lev gear I'm thinking of DE'ing. :/

Also, how does one get the average 329 when in normals it's level 318 that drops? The only 333 pieces I've seen are from quest rewards, and I've practically run out of quests now.

333s drop from normal dungeon bosses in the lvl 85 instances (Lost City of Tol'Vir, Halls of Origination, Grim Batol...hope I didn't miss any). That + crafted gear + stuff bought for JP you saved up in WotLK.

also I believe it does take into account stuff in your bags (and bank)

Well that's a load of crap then really isn't it?

I keep lots of old items in my bank, like trinkets that transform you.

Is it a known issue? Obviously it should work it on equipped gear.. :/

it's likely the same algorithm they used for PvP ratings, people who were rated much higher were equipping lower level gear just so that they could get matched against lower rated players and then mash their faces in because they were better than their rating suggested, so it took into account gear that the player had in their bank and bags.

PvE is different of course but that's likely the kind of thing that's happening. I expect it will get sorted some point soonish

Reading up on forums seems it's all bag gear, doesn't say bank gear though.

That's still crap, I carry around my fishing pole and hat for one thing, not to mention offspec gear! :p

Yeah I've read up a bit more. It's still daft though, as it takes into account items you would never or could never use; explains why my ilev has gone down after DE'ing some cloth item or staff or some such.

It's also daft as it means you can abuse the mechanics to get into a HC wearing complete crap :p

Totally agree with how ridiculous it is. Why they couldn't make it just measure the ilevels of the stuff you're wearing at the time and have it dynamically update is beyond me. You can just buy rep stuff at 333 or 346, and as long as you can wear it, even if it's the wrong kind of armour, your ilevel will go up.

As you said, people can get into heroics wearing complete crap, and it's what a few of us did initially just so we could get into randoms together :P

Ok this is a bit weird and lame. I have quite a lot of fun stuff in te bags to play the retard in the raids but as it is now this stuff all lost its value. Is this going to be fixed or are they keeping it this way?

I still have all that junk, it's just your highest ilevel piece in each slot which is taken into account. It doesn't average out the ilevel of all your stuff :)

iLVL average = Each individual inventory slot's best iLvl in inventory or equipped divided by total character slots. Two handed weapons count for 2 slots and it always works out the highest two trinkets and highest two rings. iLvl does not take into account enchants, gems, runic enhancements, engineering upgrades, etc.

If you have a better item in your inventory unequipped and you can equip it (ie, plate for cloths will not be taken into account) then it will take the unequipped item's value as it is higher, regardless of what spec it is meant for. This does mean that in my full healing gear I can strip down to the buff and still be able to queue for heroics. It also means that the system can be cheated by having a few 333 blues for other specs in your inventory to make up for lack of decent current spec gear.

It can't be averaging out everything in all your bags or I'd NEVER get into stuff; I'm always carrying around my full T2 set and Thunderfury, Quel'serrar, and bits of random 60 and 70 gear with me, plus my fishing stuff. If it is looking into your bags, it'll be only looking for the highest Cata pieces, and likely only if it's better than what you have on.

From what I can see, my average item level seems to be purely based off of what I'm wearing; if it's bugging, relog and it should hopefully settle down.

Nope, looked into it myself and it takes the highest item level you have equipped or in inventory at the time. If you place things into a bank or sell items then the average iLvl will go down.

For example, if I was wearing iLvl 312 plate shoulders (green) but had iLvl 333 cloth shoulders (blue) in my bags (kept ready to DI) the iLvl 333 one would be the one that goes towards the average for that slot, not the 312.

It does not take all your items and average them out, only the best level for each individual slot that you have on your person at that given time (Helm, Shoulders, Torso, Legs, etc)
