Backup utility

I need a simple backup utillity to backup stuff from my laptop to my desktop.

I've got hundreds of GB spare, so i don't even care if its a full drive copy. Ideally I dont just want an ISO, and i want something where I can easily access one file.

I just tried something called DirSyncPro, which is, to be honest, wank. In the last 10 hours its managed to only get 1/5th of the way through my c:\docs and settings\user folder. Network access was running at about 1.5k/s here are there, and downloading not a lot more than uploading.

Is there any nice freeware utility to do backups that people have used (essentially just copying one dir to another, but cleverly) that they can recommend? Ideally it would be nice for it to work on linux also, as my server wouldnt mind being backed up either.

I tried doing windows explorer copy, it sat for about 10 minutes going "preparing to copy" (i dont get why one has to prepare to copy) .... and then it got to like the third file and said "cant copy this file" and then just cancelled the entire operation *sigh*. maybe filezilla might help....

will have a look at those links though. i had a quick google this morning before i left for work and only found a few on a wikipedia page!

If you have a linux live DVD/CD then you can mount your ntfs partition in that and rsync without the file locking issues.

No cygwin will still suffer from file locking. That and the fact I dont like cygwin :)
