Battle.net Mobile Authenticator Now Available for More Phones
The Battle.net Mobile Authenticator, an optional security tool to help prevent unauthorized Battle.net account access, is now available for a wide range of mobile phones and carriers in the United States and Europe. Previously available only for the Apple iPhone, the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator is a mobile application that generates a one-time password to use in addition to your regular account ID and password when logging in to a Battle.net account or any merged World of Warcraft accounts.

Visit mobile.blizzard.com to purchase the application for 99 cents, or to download Blizzard Entertainment ringtones for $1.50 each and wallpapers for 99 cents apiece. iPhone and iPod touch users can download the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator for free from the Apple App Store. For more information, visit www.battle.net/bma or check out the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator FAQ.

I have the real authenticator as well; got it before they were offering the Mobile one. I don't really trust the mobile one (especially since it went wrong a lot when it was first introduced), but it'd be better than nothing.

I know some people feel like it's "giving in" or some such if you get any kind of authenticator, but at least it more or less makes your account impossible to hack (it's never 100% impossible, but this is as close as you can get to it and believe me, takes a lot of worry off the mind of anyone who's account-security conscious).

yea I personally would prefer to use the Real Thing rather than the mobile app - you never know when your mobile might crap out :D

Yep. I got the Mobile one for my Ipod Touch. Then it broke and I couldn't log in for a week while I was waiting for Blizzard customer service. The main obstacle to getting the normal authenticator is that one requires a creditcard to buy one, and most people in the Nedtherlands (including me) don't have one.

Edit: typo

is your standard current account over there not a Visa Debit card?

I'm sure they will also accept a Maestro card as payment?

AFAIK that's not a credit card, so I can't enter some of the stuff you need to enter. Unless I'm missing something of course. In that case, please enlighten me.

On a Visa Debit card, just select the "Visa/Mastercard" option, throw in your name, the card number, the expiry date and the 3 digit code on the signature strip and you're good to go. You don't need the start date or the issue number.

If you have Maestro I would be very surprised if you couldn't pay by Maestro... in addition to the above you normally also need the start date and the issue number, but they should all be on the card anyway???

Unless because of where you are from it asks for more info?

I've just checked again, and I was able to add my bank account as a payment option via my Maestro card. Haven't seen that option before.

Thought I'd bump this - the mobile version of the authenticator can now be obtained as an App for Android phones in addition to the iPhone

This.

Well, in part.

Anyone who has an authenticator, if you turn it over to the back where it has the ten-digit key unique to your authenticator (the key you plug into your account page when you first attach the authenticator to it), you'll notice below the barcode underneath that, it says "Made in China".

Apparently, determined enough account stealers can get past the authenticator as well, although it'd likely take a tremendous amount of time and effort and they'd have to know it was worth the payout. The only instance I'm aware of where someone with a proper authenticator had their account hacked was a fellow on Argent Dawn who had, between his characters there, over a million gold (kid you not). That amount of gold obviously made him a worthwhile target, and he was hacked.

I'm fairly certain nobody on our realm has anything like that much on their accounts, though, and would be safe with an authenticator, and I really would recommend that real, physical one over the digital ones.
