Battlefield 2 Microphone Volume

So yesterday, while playing with Macca, he couldn't hear a thing I was saying using the ingame VoIP software in Battlefield 2. I've noticed this with a few other people as well, so decided to go hunting for a solution this morning. The best I could find was "Turn the transmit and receive volumes to 100%. If that still fails, click the boost mic gain button in BF2". Now, not having used this magical boost mic gain button before, I decided that it's probably worth a shot. Load up BF2 and find that I can't click the button.

"Great". Now what? So I decided to dig around my PC in the attempt to fix it. And I did! \o/ So below is how I managed to do it, so that you others might be able to use it too.

  • First thing's first. You need to tell how well BF2 is transmitting your voice in order to tell if what you are doing is working. And I have a problem with BF2 "stealing" my mouse (I just can't see it) if I alt+tab out of the game, so its not like we can use that. Helpfully, EA give you a nice VoIP setup tool! Go to your \EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 directory and find the programme called BF2VoiceSetup.exe. Run it. Speak into your mic, and it should give the same problem as BF2. Mine did. If yours doesn't, well... Unlucky!

    Should look like this:

Ensure that your threshold in this program is set low enough that you can hear yourself talking. For me, this was setting it to zero. Don't worry, we will change this later, just don't close the window!

[*]Next, open up your sound volume control. Open up control panel. In XP control panel has two views: classic (ie, like windows 98) and category. In classic mode, click "Sounds and Audio Devices". In category view, click "Sound Speech, and Audio Devices" and then "Adjust the system volume". Both should give you a window that looks SOMETHING like

    window.jpg

[*]Click the "Advanced" tab under "Device volume". This brings up another window (not gonna show you as its HUGE for me), and you want to show all the devices you have. So click "Options", "Properties", select your primary audio device from the drop down list, and click the "Playback" radio button. Select everything in the list and click ok. Back in "Options", make sure the "Advanced Controls" is ticked.

[*]Now we can see everything under playback, go back and change to "Recording", and do the same (there is method to my madness, fear not). Make sure the microphone volume is all the way up, and make sure the microphone is selected as the record device. Click the "Advanced" button underneath it. Make sure the "Mic Boost (+20dB)" option is ticked. Click close.

[*]Go back to the playback options. Now, this is the bit I don't understand, but it worked for me. Up until now, BattleCommo (the VoIP setup program for BF2) had been having the same problem as BF2 - I couldn't even hear myself with the threshold set right down. And in the playback options, my microphone was at 50% volume, and muted. This shouldn't matter as its to do with playback, not recording. So "Hell", I thought, "We'll give it a go!". Unmute the microphone and put the volume right up. When you test your voice, you should be able to hear yourself now. If not, give it 2 seconds (windows needs to catch up). Now, this in itself didn't fix my BF2 problem. Only when I clicked the "Advanced" tab did BattleCommo sudden jump into life and give me all my background noise. Mute the playback of your mic again (so you don't get feedback) and BattleCommo should be fine.

[*]Set the threshold in BattleCommo to something you are happy with (14% for me), save and exit! I then loaded up BF2, went on a server, joined a squad, asked if they could hear me ok, and they could :)

Now, like I said, I don't know WHY this works (as clicking "Advanced" shouldn't do anything) but it did for me. At least its a start for you other people with the same problem, and I'm sorry if it doesn't help everyone!

With your bf2 stealing your mouse pointer problem, i have the same thing... but if I click the mouse and move it a bit then I get it back... anyway a good post! I may actually try some of this as I can never actually hear anyone in-game anyway...
