[Tech] Battlefield 3 Crashes

Nanor with a technical problem? HAS THE WORLD GONE MAAAAAAAAAD?!

Nope. I've been long overdue something going wrong with my shit heap so it's finally came along just in time for Skyrim and Battlefield 3. The crash has only occured in Battlefield 3 so far. When I'm playing normally, SP or MP, things will go fine until the screen goes black and the same sound loops until the computer restarts itself. I restart the computer and get the bluescreen code "1000007e". Googling it has given me no advice whatsoever so I turn to you.

At first I thought it was something to do with a conflict of my Realtek onboard sound card and punkbuster but playing Single Player and getting crashes leads me to believe otherwise.

Any bright ideas? :(

I cant imagine you havent tried this, have you? :p Playing the game on the absolute lowests settings including resolution? This game is fabled to run at 30fps on the old Nvidia 8800GT.

As an aside (though I know Nanor told me earlier it wasn't this), both I and a friend are running BF3 on GeForce 560 Ti's that were pre-overclocked by the supplier to 900MHz from the base 822MHz. Apparently this is common for this card, so that's fine.

I have had NO problems with these settings in any other game. However, for some reason, I have to set my graphic card's clock settings lower than the 900MHz to stop it crashing every 15 minutes. I can run mine fine at 850MHz, while my friend has to go all the way back to 822MHz. You can easily do this with unlocking the Nvidia System Tools via the download from the Nvidia site.

I'm not linking to the download and saying, "JUST GO NUTS!" because I take no responsibility for you messing with your card settings. Just letting you know what worked for me.

Firstly check you're logs with error codes and just consult Google with the findings...

I personally have experience with a "shit heap" and know full well a bad PSU can mask a whole lot of problems regardless of make model and wattage.

All my problems back in the day spanned from a bad CM Ultima that I only had for 6 months... only till I replaced it 12 months ago did I realise that this is why my builds were failing.

Hope you get it sorted.... some monster games out that need playing.. ESPECIALLY BF3!

I had trouble with a super-clocked 8800GTS last year. It crashed often enough to make me use nvidia tool to lower the clock speed. The result, it fried the card.

I simply bought a new one (not over clocked) the same day and it has been very stable since. Rest assured I will not be buying any graphics card again that are overclocked by the manufacturer - is a risky business.

Graphics cards are so fast these days, why choose speed over stability?

In saying all that BF3 is a brand new game and will have stability issues that will undoubtedly settle down in forthcoming patches.

M'kay. Disabled the OnBoard sound and it's running peachy. The only thing is... no sound!

Guess I'll go look for a sound card.

Disabled in bios or windows? As you still have the front panel connectors as W7 treats these as separate devices.
