Battleground Europe

It is a combined arms war simulation otherwise known as a virtual battlefield. A player can command or crew a variety of accurately modeled aircraft, armored fighting vehicles, anti-tank guns, anti-aircraft artillery, and naval vessels, or fight as a foot-soldier with a variety of infantry weapons. The game is played in real time alongside or against other players as German, British (UK) and French forces in a persistent world. Command structures and missions provide strategic and tactical layers while ranks provide a RPG layer by demonstrating leadership roles. WWIIOL online uses a ½ scale map of Western Europe with 30,000 km² of accurate terrain (800 m resolution satellite data). It is commonly recognized as the first MMOFPS.

Thanks Wiki!

They've got a free trial going on, anyone feel like joining me for a jump into WW2 Europe?

Is it still insanely wide open with miles and miles of desolate terrain between the occasional and hard to find firefight?

No, I was pretty much at a fight every time I spawned. Took maybe a 5 minute walk to get into battle but I had no idea what to do. I kinda walked about in the cardboard cut-out towns and managed to kill a man. Then walked a bit further and died.

The graphics are horrible and there is absolutely no tutorial apart from the wiki which is vague at best. It would be great if you knew how to play and had people to play with, but you can see why it's not successful.

If I remember correctly, this is just World War II online re-badged. If so, I'm NOT going to try it again. I played that when it was originally released. Yes you need to organise a full army to go and do something to have any enjoyment out of the game

I seriously considered this game back in 2005, and you guys have sumed up the main faults quite well.

Dated graphics....too much open space...

More for people wanting a serious sense of historical/geographical understanding of WW2 action in Europe.
