[Blood Bowl] Because sometimes, it IS the dice.

So, thought after my Undead team was crushed to little pieces, I'd try out Nurgle. I rolled a team in the Nagg Open, and so far had managed to draw two games, and lose one. Frustrating luck in all games, but I don't like to blame everything on the dice.
For my 4th game I was up against Ogres - with only one snotling having any skill (jump up). "Hoorah!", I thought, "A potential win, even if the dice are cruel to me!".

Nuffle: Nope.jpg

ABSOLUTE WORST LUCK I'VE EVER HAD. I need to throttle someone.

and here, have the replay, too.

So, for those of you (like Panda) who claim luck has little to do with it... I hate you. :p

If it makes you feel any better, I think anyone who says that luck doesn't come into dice or card games is fucking stupid. Same applies to any in-game rolls (I am uber unlucky with loot rolls, for example).

Yeah, If you look at the frequency plot at the bottom of that, it looks like your 'luck' started off well, then dropped, whereas your opponents was more consistent throughout the game. THose histograms don't look pretty though.

Luck doesn't exist really, it's an idea developed by people to make the results of random occurrences into some sort of context.

The context was they were being shit.

My very first roll was a 2DB, and it was Both Down/Attacker Down. Pretty much set the mood.

EDIT: also, that chart at the very bottom is a frequency chart for the block dice rolled. All that shows is just how many Skulls I was rolling in comparison to what should have been the average.

In such games, "luck" always has an effect - the real skill in ALL of these games is in minimising the effect of the "bad" luck on your game - generally achieved by reducing the number of chances you have to actually receive the "bad" luck.

So, what was the end result? (And yea, if the snotlings refuse to go down, ogres are a hard fight. And playing as nurgle is always hard ;))

2-0 to the ogres. I barely had anything left on the pitch, and anything I did have was on the floor. As you can see, he didn't fail a single throw with the ogres either - there was absolutely nothing I could do :(

I'm not arguing skill doens't play a part, and that you can or can't turn games around, I'm saying luck can make or break a game no matter how well you play.

Wow that is terrible luck. I’ve never seen such a discrepancy in the 2d6 (chance of breaking armour). That is absolutely massive! Not to mention your crap block dice in general.

I’ve never had a match with such bad stats as that and I never want to. In games like that there is really nothing you can do. Risk mitigation and minimizing dice rolls can only take you so far when the dice gods are farting in your general direction.

The worst part was, it was against Ogres. The shame!

At least it wasn't against Halflings. Getting your arse kicked by Halflings when you think you are a competant coach with a good team is really tough. Really, really tough.

Ogres on the other hand have a lot of Mighty Blow and that high strength, so can dish out the pain if they get good dice. I recall 1 MM match a long time ago with my Liz vs Ogres and I had 1 skink left on the field at the end of the game. 1 Skink!

Although i managed to draw that match 1-1 my team was totally wiped out, with many serious injuries and quickly retired.

You playing in the Crunch Cup at the moment?

Eeesh. Having that many Saurii knocked out is tough. I get annoyed when I have any more than one off the pitch at any one time :p

As for the CC - I'm not in it, no. It started shortly after I joined the forums, and the "reserve" place was snapped up before I could get to it. I really should throw a team into the CTA league to start getting a few games in - although I have no clue as to what team I'd want to go with. Is there usually a particular shortage of any one race?

Due to having 32 teams, they usually have 1 team of every race available. So its pretty varied. However i would say that Dark Elf, Necro and Undead are the most popular teams, so are generally more highly represented.

You can either start a rookie team or play up to 5 matches in CTA and submit that team. I guess they will organise divisions based on tv though, so if you put in an experienced team you are likely to play against other experienced teams.

I may well just throw in a rookie team of a race I have little to no experience with - something like Humans or Norse. Heck, it can't go any worse than my recent games.

I'm not sure if i will have a chance to participate in the next CC. Depends on when it starts and how busy i am. I was thinking to submit a Norse team i have with a few games under their belts. But now that i consider it, i prefer to put in a straight tv 1,000 team.
