Just grabbed it 'cos it was only 6 quid!
Offer on until about midnight on Monday.

Will have to see how I get on with it.
Is the Legendary Edition the one you guys use in your league thingy?
Just in case I develop delusions of competence and fancy a go.

Also, can you recommend any good sites for tips etc?

Yes, it is. You're now league able.

http://bbtactics.com/ Coach runs a great site with skill breakdowns and tactics. There are also links to the current editions of the living Rulebook for blood bowl if you feel the need to delve deeper.

Generally I would suggest doing the tutorial, as the controls are a little clunky.

Learning the game, well, best to play against the AI for a bit to get to grips with the rules, and some basic tactics. However, it is a very complex strategic game, and so the AI is nowhere near up to scratch. Once you get a grip of the rules, you'll find beating it a doddle.

That's where human opponents come in. I'm sure any of us will be willing to give you a few friendly matches and tips therein.

The THN perpetual league is set up, and runs with 6 week seasons, so if you were interested, you're welcome to investigate that.

A typical game against a human lasts maybe 1 1/2 hours (longer if you're playing Ronin). Against the AI, 1/2 hour to 45 mins.

The time commitment to the league is one game a week, so not that bad.

Ghostwolf still has delusions of competence, poor mite.

Ta muchly for the info.
Been playing this morning and discovered two things...
1: I suck.
2: I should read the manual a bit.

I think I've managed to score a total of two touchdowns so far.
Tactics... I should develop some!

by the way, don't touch the realtime mode. at all.

ever.

Ewww, yeah. It's like the HIV of gaming.

Don't worry, you'll soon begin to pick up how to play.

What roster are you using?

For new players, I guess I'd recommend orcs, humans, undead or wood elves, all are fairly forgiving, though in different ways.

Orcs are a tough all round team. Humans are similarly flexible, though less strong and a bit more speedy. Wood elves have high agility and movement values, and can be relied on to do almost anything, except hurt your opponent, and stay on the pitch.

Undead have a great mix of strength and toughness, and aren't too slow, with access to ghouls.

Personally, if you're thinking of BB as a fight game, Orcs are a good choice, but if you're thinking a bit more like it's American Football with weapons then Humans work really well. I found it difficult to get Orcs to play flexibly, but Humans can, if they make it through their first 3-4 games, stand up in a fight and out maneuver if that's not working.

I've just been poking about with different races to see what some of the differences are.
Faves so far are probably Amazons for a bit of everything.
And yeah, just doing the "Classic" mode stuff.

It's absorbing and kinda fun but very frustrating cos i'm so crappy at the moment.... onwards to the field!

Now installed and getting some practice in,

Rolling orks at the moment for the slow stompy game! Also tried undead, but from what i see they are a bit overpowered and would seem a bit unfair to play them - mummys - rawr!

Been playing the blitz mode, but on turn based - will not be recognising the real time rubbish as a thing ever! omg awfull!

what mode is the tournament in? Blitz or original ruleset? Wanna make sure im o-fay with whatever im getting myself into!

Also - Amazons......Major Boobage

We play turn based classic ruleset. Some of the extended inducements are a bit ludicrous. The AG up potion at 40,000 with an 80% chance of working for one.

Undead are a tough team. I also feel they're a little, user friendly, shall we say.

blood bowl is like that sometimes...

the game i played yesterday i had to use an apothecary on a dead player, the player died because i rerolled double skulls to both downs (on my own turn) and then failed the armour on that roll....

In my league game against Vel I badly injured my super star catcher through a failed re-roll of a Go For It, and then smashed the hip of my treeman with a double re-rolled double attacker down result. Yay for MV 1 treeman ¬_¬

Still, BB without injuries wouldn't be anything like as fun - especially for the bashy teams :p

There is no unfair... There is only Blood Bowl.

And competent? Me? I've never claimed anything of the sort.

To normal people, that sentence is complete gibberish... "Smashed the hip of your WHAT-man? Double rolled double atta.. talk English, boy!"

However, I pretty much understood most of it.

I think I'm starting to get to grips with BB now :)
Played a campaign competition league thingy and came second overall!
I actually won a couple of matches :D Huzzah for me!
Played Amazons and made some nifty passing TDs. They seem a little weak on defence but that could just be me.

/want "get on with it you dozy computer player" button.

I think you can use the '+' button to speed up games against the AI, as you can also use it in watching replays...

Sounds like you're getting into it pretty quickly - if you ever want a friendly I'm always up for a game (and I'll be gentle, baby ;))

Amazons are a fairly bashy team, and as all start with dodge they do very well from the get-go, as very few teams start with the Tackle skill to negate your dodge ability (dwarfs have an abundance of tackle, but that's about it).
Amazons play more of a running game than a throwing game, in my experience, but short passes once in a while can't do much harm. If you're interesting in throwing and hiding than running and bashing, look towards an elven team, as they are the masters of it.

Had a very fun game against elves last night with an undead team (purley for caging practice)

They got round me and scored once, damn chain of perfect passing and loads of dodging!

By second half they where down three players, one broken hip, one broken neck and a badly hurt!

By the end of the game they had 5 players on the field, until one decided to lay down and got heavily stomped and killed! YAY

As commentator Bob Bifford says "The only good elf is a dead elf!"

Now onto the Orks for tourney practice :)

Will have to take you up on that offer. Not sure when I can get a game in, probably the weekend. If I get an evening free and see you on the forum I'll give you a shout too.
I think I've got the basics down now but got lots more to figure out - so I'll be picking your brains a bit! (and by "a bit" I really mean "a lot"!)

I figured the Amazons were a passing team as they specifically have Throwers and Catchers. I was using them in my lineup and tried to concentrate on making passing plays rather than running too much. Worked well if I was able to sneak a catcher around the line and sneak tehm close to the end zone.

Anyhoo, I'll poke you or we'll set a time over the weekend :D
