Broadband trouble

Theres no real appropriate place for this so I shall put it here.

Hey guys eversince yesterday, as soon as I log on to a server it comes up "There is a problem with your connection" however I can still see people moving to points and still see when someone kills someone else although its very jerky.

I have turned my firewall off and still get it.

I got some stupid e-mail from Tiscali on Thursday bassically saying that ive been using up to much bandwidth and they have put me on a line with a buch of other heavy users.
Further to our previous two heavy usage warnings, this email is to inform you that we have not seen any significant reduction in your peak time usage. We have therefore started managing your usage during peak hours.

All of our users have the right to an acceptable quality of service and to ensure this Tiscali employs a Fair Use Policy (http://www.tiscali.co.uk/fup). This gives Tiscali the right to manage customers whose usage adversely affects our network and the service of other customers. This is referred to in clause 8.4 of the Terms and Conditions of our Broadband service (note clauses 5.9 in the old Terms and Conditions if you registered before 2005) and detailed in our Fair Use Policy.

From now on, during peak hours you will share bandwidth with other heavy users.

Although your service will still be unlimited, your experience when downloading at peak hours will depend on what you and the other heavy users are doing. If everyone is web-browsing and reading emails, you will experience normal broadband speed. If on the other hand everyone continues to use Peer to Peer or file sharing software you will experience slower broadband speeds.

Your broadband service will not be affected outside of the peak hours.

Now I think this may have something to do with it, however I can play CSS or DOD ect without any lag or connection problems plus it also says that it will not be affected outside peak hours. and when I try it outside peak hours it still does the same.

Ive also noticed that when Im downloading a file on a P2P network or from an HTTP or anything I am getting really slow download rates of about 8kbps to about 90kbps.

When I use a free bandwidth tester its comming up with about 700Kbps.

HELP!!!!

Looks like your P2P activities are biting you, mate. If you're prioritised in with other heavy bandwidth users then your latency will suck badly and I don't see any reason why their claim that you'll have a "normal" service in normal hours would be true. Easiest solution, for them, is to indicate in RADIUS (or whatever they use for authentication) that your account is to be dumped in some rack of DSL modems that is 6 years old and has smoke coming out of it and just do that at all times of day. Remember that "non peak hours" to them may be "01:00 to 06:00"...

Time to switch providers?

Its strange though that I get a latency of 30 or 40 playing CSS or DOD though, and it says that "non peak hours are "11:00 to 8:00" or something

The Battlefield series have always been a bit weird with their netcode, 'tis true. Contrarily, I've found HL works with almost anything.

It seems that you picked the wrong internet provider,go for something orthodox like BT or NTL

Hmm I tried it on this other really shit computer that is lying in the corner and that was downloading stuff not too badly, and have connected this one up again and its working fine, i can play BF2 and the p2p is a reasonable speed.

So I think it might be this bussiness about Tiscali puting me on another line. I shall check tommorow on Peak hours and see then.

I have had LOTS of problems with Bulldog >=(

Well, some... It took them 3 months to activate my order. Yes, 3 months... It took Pipex 3 days last year. Bulldog took 3 months. I ordered it a month and a half before going to uni, so I had a month and a half without internet. Wow. Thanks bulldog. Thanks.

Secondly, I ordered a static IP. Did I get one? No. Did I get charged for it? Yes.
I phoned them up,
"Excuses me, I ordered a static IP, which is £5 extra a month, and you are charging me for it, why don't I have it?",
"Oh, sorry, here's your money back.",
"Thanks, can I have a static IP please?",
"No.",
"Why?",
"*shrug*".

Oh yes, I love bulldog! ¬_¬
If you can get it, BeThere is trailing in a few places - (up to) 24Meg downstream, (up to) 1.3Meg up, £24/month. Not bad if you ask me. Even if you only get a third of that speed, you'll be paying less then with Bulldog and getting the same service :)

note that the bulldog cost includes the cost of your phone line too... the BeThere service doesn't

And I really don't know why u are so obsessed with having a static IP anyway
