BT's Race to Infinity

so a friend has just linked me to this. (bear in mind this will very likely only work in the UK)

BT are asking people to vote for their area to receive BT Infinity (fibre) broadband, with the top 5 areas, as voted for by people using this website, getting it added to their exchange in addition to the rest of BT's rollout plan.

I personally have voted for my local exchange but I'm not entirely sure if this is a good thing to do or not...

Pffft for entering information. Also, I love how they are doing "ultra fast fibre optic" at 40Mbps (or so I'm told) and yet Virgin Media are doing 50Mbps and have done for ages now.

Compared to the current speeds that some people get, 40mbps is "Ultra fast" :p

It's certainly 8x the speed of my current connection :D

Twice as fast as mine, as I refuse to let Virgin do crazy packet sniffing on my datas! Though I thought I heard something about BT being required to open up their fibre optic to other ISPs or some such?

An exchange needs over 1000 signatures to be added to the rollout list, and it's only Fibre to the Cabinet.

Download speeds (for business at the moment) are 40MB and upload are 1MB for the cheaper option of £30/m or 10MB up for £45/m.

(After having been through many issues with BT Business Broadband Dept (Who are wankers) Those speeds are still dependant on your distance to the green boxes from your house.

Update:

Having gone through that process, I am the first person to vote for my exchange and need 75% of the exchange's applications to sign this online petition. This is awesome because we only have 550 residential connections in our exchange so getting fiber in my village could be actually really easy!

Back to starting the campaign for faster internet connections! (I did it last time to get us upgraded for ADSL)

From their FAQ...
BT said:
What is the Race to Infinity?
The Race to Infinity is a nationwide competition run by BT whereby members of the public and local businesses can vote to get our superfast fibre broadband, BT Infinity, in their exchange. The top 5 exchanges with the most registered interest as a % of the total telephone exchange size on 31st December will be added to BT’s fibre rollout plan. Exchanges need to get a minimum of 1,000 votes in order to enter the race. People will be able to register their interest via the web site (www.bt.com/racetoinfinity) from 4th October to 31st December 2010.

Just in case they were to turn around and say no (as they might do if it turned out it would be really expensive)

On the whole though, an interesting idea. The UK broadband infrastructure is miles behind other countries, will be nice to see some faster speeds in the (hopefully near) future.

Yeah I got through reading the campaigners pack, not going to bother with that, less than 1,000 means they'll just not bother...
