Cataclysm Alphas and Betas: info and a warning

The Cataclysm Alpha (or the "Friends and Family Beta", if you prefer) has started up and a very early version of Cata is now being tested; when I say "very early", I mean that the current build only has a few talent changes in, and half the terrain that's going to be modified hasn't yet had its modifications besides those granted by the new water and texturing engines.

Before I go on, a very big, important warning:

The Beta invites have NOT gone out. There will be a big announcement when they do. Until then, anything about the Beta you get in emails or in-game or anywhere else IS A SCAM, DO NOT TOUCH IT.

Right, that said, on to the Alpha.

There's a LOT of screenies of areas, zone maps, new models and suchlike, plus information on professions and even early talent trees (without the Mastery stuff) on MMO-Champion. Don't expect everything to be up on there 'cause it's one man doing all that (to my knowledge), and he's working from within a Non-Disclosure Agreement; put simply, he can get bollocked for what he's doing, so he's being careful about what he DOES show. On the one hand, some of what he shows is good publicity and sparks interest, but on the other hand Blizzard don't want everything shown off yet.

Also, before people throw off massively negative rants: this is the start of the Alpha. Not all of the stuff has even been loaded onto it yet, let alone tested. If you feel like lambasting something you see there, then take your hands off the keyboard, take a deep breath, and bugger off somewhere until you can think of a way to put it simply without it sounding like a rant/whine/accusation/other major form of negativity. I'm sure nobody will mind if you say "I kinda prefer the current look of Zone X as it is now", but "omg Zone X looks crap etc" or "omg those placeholder-and-not-yet-tested talents ruin my game!" will earn either comments about your intelligence, or earn a moderation from me.

That said, good look at the shinies!

To complement Windzarko's information, talent trees are NOT done yet and are having talents modified or added for testing purposes. A quick look at the Death Knight trees will show ability damage vastly increased to compensate for the new rune regeneration timer while everything maintains its normal place in the tree, for example (tanking talents will be moved / reformulated to the Blood tree).

Rogues have their toe to toe combat talents added, although location is quite likely not the final one, should they persist.

As for the screenies, some of the locations look gorgeous, and Org is finally going to look as epic as it deserves to be, I'm sure. :)

Ouch... well, at least you have/had something to come home to!

And Zagg, I'm with you on the Org front. Now the place really does look HORDE.

Also like the small Tauren, Troll and Goblin areas in it, and the Azshara exit will be great for speedy travel purposes.

How do you go about getting into these beta thingies anyway?

You don't get into this one unless you're a close friend or family member of key Blizzard employees, so this phase is known as the "Friends & Family Alpha/Beta" phase.

The main Closed Beta will be an invites-only thing that'll happen in a few weeks to a month or so, and you can opt in for a beta invite in your battle.net account management page. There's a beta-opt in page there somewhere and you can opt in for ones for Starcraft II, Diablo III and Cataclysm. When you get a beta-key, you'll receive a full, proper email from Blizzard about it (watch out for scam ones), and I assume they'd flag something up on your account management as well.

The Closed Beta hasn't started yet, so ALL emails offering beta keys right now are scams. Once the Beta starts, though, authentic emails will be sent out. Regardless of how authentic they look, NEVER follow any links from any such emails just in case it IS a scam one; manually go to your battle.net page and enter the beta key or whatever they do his time around.

Back to the screenshots a second: that "Twin Peaks" place looks to be a new Battleground, and the name and look of the place makes me think quite strongly of "Facing Worlds" (or just "Face"), one of the original classic Unreal Tournament CTF maps. A fair few folk likely remember that I'm not a die-hard PvP fanatic, but the idea of a Face-style Battleground has a fair bit of appeal...

Hot diggity damn! I think this is the first time I've looked through new content and actually been overly excited to see it implemented. With the looks of that terrain I don't even care if they destroy all the classes I play, it looks SO damn good :D

Look at the current Boomkin tree in the talents that have been datamined (below the screenshots of the zones but above the random models/maps screenies).

They're doing a lot more to classes than they said, from the looks of it, and if people can keep trying to argue homogenization and bland gameplay when they're putting that much effort into working on classes, then to be blunt, they're spouting unfounded bollocks :p
