[Tech] Child Safety Online

Right. Gimptime.

I've just been reading This article on the BBC website, and also reading through some of the comments which people have been putting online.

They range from some people who are protecting their 5 year old "baby"s* and logging everything their children do and download and say on the internet (what a surprise that they use Macs eh...), to people who say that the problem should be solved with interaction between parents and kids, rather than a piece of software.

I won't start off with my opinion, but thought I'd throw it out to other people as I'd like to hear what other people think about the whole push for bubble wrapping childrens experiences on the internet (probably not being helped by making them use IE for this....)

Discuss :)

* - I know its babies, but they typed "baby" :p

No 100% chance everyone will be fully safe online, what with scammers, charmers in kids chat rooms 'n stuff. Dont see why people really bother trying cause most of the time, it doesnt help.

There was a thing about it in the news this morning - computers and the internet are now the norm, and kids these days will be growing up where the Internet is an essential part of life.

There is apparently some new cartoon aimed at 7 and under children that teaches them about internet safety.

As a guy from Ceop on the beeb put it this morning, "We teach kids how to cross the road but we don't need to make a car for that to happen" (something similar anyway) - similarly, even if The Internet is not yet a big part of a child's life, teaching them rules like don't give out your personal information and don't talk to strangers is a good thing.

First and foremost; I don't believe in cotton-wooling kids. I mean this in two different ways; I don't think you should stop them from knowing about any 'adult' topic. I think that's wrong; a child should know the damage that can be caused through not being careful, using common sense etc. I think that a lot of children learn better through this method.

I also think you shouldn't try and 'protect' your kids from life, trying to retain their innocence, as that can have a negative impact later in life. Again, I could explain a lot more on this, but this time, I won't.

I don't think you should ever rely on a program to keep your kid safe. You should explain to your child exactly why that sort of program is necessary, as soon as they start using the internet. My opinion is the same on things such as drugs. Okay, if you're going to use them, use them, but know all the facts, as in, seriously know them, and you won't be tempted to use them dangerously.

If you explain to a kid why you've set up a specific program to block content, explain the risk people online pose to them, the kids will spend less time trying to break the programs, and be more careful speaking to people online.

At least, that's my opinion. I've got a pretty... free opinion on this.

Remember in my Junior school when i was about 8, that was the first time ive experienced porn. Was lulworthy, teacher had a massive go at me. Learn to block websites in schools imo.

On the plus side, the proliferation of internet pornography ensures no one from our generation will ever have to have the awkward 'birds and the bees' talk with their kids.

I remember in High School when I was about 15 our computing teacher challenged us to circumvent the system and access porn.

She was batshitcrazy.
