Clarification on TS3 Usage

We seem to recently have some newcomers to the TS3 server (teamspeak3.thehavennet.org.uk) that have made their own channel "clan Ts3" and I certainly haven't heard anything from them yet as to what they are doing there.

They are:
unda BkeHFaOBS72DgxoJMAojqwYnIMo=
Beren j8I4batmWoiivBC08L+e//CymcU=
POnDa 3CDNpsGaaSRK90IPX6OH0JQpanI=
Power bndhLIbSDINkhgZBbGAdYuLhI0Q=
Master_Grix ++HihCavKgapwgSVXNzJrmi4dO8=

Clarification on whether they are approved or not would be excellent, and please delete this post. Otherwise please investigate as you see fit.

To be in there, they either guessed our server password (not hard), found it on our forums, or the server isn't enforcing passwords. If just a handful, I'm not too worried. If they start proliferating at the expense of THNers then I'd be fine seeing them warned (this isn't a free server) and, if necessary, kicked.

That said, I'm getting a bit tired with the proliferation of personal and/or one-use channels. It's not really my domain, though.

On the former point, the password is being enforced still and is required to login to the server.

I'm afraid I cannot comment on the others made however, thank you for the quick response.

As long as they don't cause a problem then they are pretty much ok in my eyes.
I do agree with Ronin on the making your own little personal room thing, perhaps a game related channel policy should be put in place. That is fairly lenient buy avoids the issue of people creating a channel just for themselves. Basically as the server is already setup just in a more reinforced way.

I too agree* with the above regarding named, personal channels, though on the other hand there are many of us who choose an existing channel and make it our own sometimes to the point that a subchannel has to be made when anyone else wishes to use that channel.

Have you chaps considered making the creation of (semi-perm/perm only.) non subchannels a forum only request, its hardly any more bureaucracy than we have already.

*But then i have some wacky ideas about organising the channels so the two :P with the highest average user counts are at the bottom so meh, and i think its a shame that semi-perm and temp channels are not organised alphabetically but thats just my dislike of change.

Having just noticed that the channel Name clan Ts3 is flagged passworded, and thus antisocial, i think that this should be investicated soon.

Having just spoke to the guy in the channel with text speak, he seems to be nice and the following to say, ive directed him to this forum, and we'll see where it goes from there. To see what he said click below.

<18:21:50> "Mk1": hi, who are you chaps
<18:22:12> "unda": wat u mean?
<18:22:22> "Mk1": how do you come to be on this server
<18:23:04> "unda": duno we been on this server for quite some time now
<18:23:06> "Mk1": i mean, are you wow players or eve or who do you chaps know
<18:23:18> "unda": we are dota players :)
<18:23:31> "Mk1": its just a few people have become concerned with your channel being passworded, its a little antisocial :P
<18:23:40> "unda": haha
<18:23:49> "unda": its a clan channel
<18:23:51> "unda": for dota clannies
<18:23:56> "unda": thats it really
<18:24:01> "unda": can take pass off if need be
<18:25:00> "Mk1": could you change the name to reflect the purpose as well, that would be great, and i shall refer what you've said to the admins via our forum. just ltting ya know ill do that as i'd be rude not to say
<18:25:14> "Mk1": so you dont know anyone from THN, the haven net
<18:25:55> "unda": nope, not too sure who got us to use this ts, one of my mates, i know some of em used to play wow. but we use it for dota.
<18:27:05> "Mk1": well its a community server that isnt free, so if you sign up on our forums, im sure someone can set you up with a perm dota channel asuming its non for private use, hence my and others problem with your current channel being passworded
<18:27:58> "unda": ah i c, if we dont sign up, cos i don have cash to sign up :(, then wer can we get free ts? if that is possible?
<18:28:20> "Mk1": our community is free

Ask them to write a channel description, if they cant, delete the channels.

What about setting it up so that guests/normal users can only create temporary sub-channels of existing channels, and create sub-channels of a new permanent "Personal Channels" channel. Would allow for people to do their own thing without having to spend hours getting an admin, and you wouldn't end up with millions of unused channels that were used for five seconds cluttering the server (i'm looking at you, WoW)

2cents.

Hey guys whats up,
Sorry to those who have been affected by this private channel, also for not explaining what the channel is about. We play Dota,an because most of us are on ts we decided to make a ts clan :) so all of us in that channel are on dota on ts as a clan. I have taken off, an in future will leave off, the password as i was unaware of its consequences. One of our members also prefers to use ts on lower bandwith usage, so we create our own channel to lower bandwith usage. If i need to put a channel description in please let me know. Hope this has helped the lot of you understand why we have made our own channel.
Regards Unda

In short, because I'm almost too tired to live...

Unda: thanks for the clarification. We prefer non-passworded and thank you for helping out there. Shouldn't be any problem you using TS, especially if you get yourself registered on these forums.

Mk1/Psi: I'll have a look at permissions and discuss them with the Admins to see what looks like a sound play here.

Ronin, Bloke and myself have had a play with TS3 permission system already, so if you need anything re: permissions within TS3 just give one of us a poke :)

Re: Unda.

As you guys have to create a channel every time you login to TS3, I've added a couple of Generic 'Low Bandwidth' channels in the group "Generic Channels". Feel free to use those instead of having to create them everytime you enter the server. If you need these values changed, let us know via this thread :)

So, after the creation of the generic channels we still have new "perm" tagged user channels appearing:

Name:
The City of Kings (323)
Codec:Speex Ultra-Wideband (32 kHz)
Codec Quality:7 (estimated bitrate: 5.32 KiB/s)
Type:Perm
Current Clients:1 / Unlimited
Subscription Status:Subscribed
Voice Data Encryption:Encrypted

 Description:

Brad and Baldis channel.

Nothing whatsoever to do with World of Warcraft, this is a SOCIAL channel where Bradley and Baldi can chat together while playing games.

Visitors to the channel ARE WELCOME, WHATEVER GAME THEY ARE PLAYING, but if asked, please respect Brad and Baldi's privacy.

I feel it neccessary to repeat: THIS CHANNEL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WORLD OF WARCRAFT so input from WoW 'authority' or 'officers' IS NOT WELCOME. Please leave our channel alone.

Thanks - Baldi.

Please delete this channel :P I have bolded the line which makes no sense, plus as i dont know who has the authority to make the channel permenant it just seems totally pointless for its existance.

In other news it seems you can unsubscribe to channels to hide(Myrdin Technologies) them :)

The text in that channel is the result of a misunderstanding/misinformed decision/whatever you want to call it resulting in the deletion of the channel for no good reason. The channel was (and still is) being used, and there is no need to delete the channel. Unless I here directly otherwise from Haven himself, I'll personally see to it that the channel stays in place.

The channel is being hosted on THN's teamspeak server. If a THN community member has a concern with it, you better believe they're welcome to make input regarding it -- regardless of their affiliation (or lack thereof) with any other THN subgroup.

And as an aside, the aggressive attitude really isn't winning you any support.

Wasn't intended as aggressive, it was more that this is kicking up now when I thought the hubbub had just settled down so I was angling for a stronger way of putting it in the hopes of avoiding further aggro.

I think this needs sorting before people get any more terse than they already are. Could we get a definitive set of policy/guideline/rules up on a front page explaining what THN is all about and some do/don'ts.

This FAQ entry, which is a duplicate of what all users agreed to on joining this forum, is a pretty good stab at that.

As for specific TS things, that's under discussion in the Admin Team at the moment.
