CoD: Black Ops

So the bad boy has been released today. Have Treyarch managed to create an amazing, perfectly balanced FPS experience? Or is it a bit shit? I haven't actually got it. My mate's playing it next door but I'm deathly afraid of consoles. I might give it a whirl later, though.

Any of you guys had a bit of a go with it?

Kirby is bashing away at it now, claims it's much better than the last one but has some latency issues

Don't they risk just, y'know, being yet another modern-day shooter?

I dunno. I'm fairly dubious about the whole CoD franchise, now. Had a play of MW2 courtesy of thatbloke's kind lending (for rather too long, sorry about that mate). Sure, it was fine, but I really didn't get a huge kick out of it.

Yeah ive never understood the fanatical following of the COD/MOH crowd. It's like sports games getting released yearly just to have the latest names attached to them, with maybe 1 or 2 more pixels here or there.
I was thinking about it, and the idea of a sports game fan having entire shelves devoted to 10 or so of the same title made me laugh out loud.

It's not that hard, CoD4 totally blew everyone away - the console crowd and PC crowd alike - with its incredible gameplay and addictive unlock system. Something that good is bound to attract a lot of interest when a new installment comes out.

In an interview with IGN, Treyarch's community manager, Josh Olin said the partnership would allow for better security measures to deal with cheating.

Pfff, who cares about cheating.

As Tetsuo says COD4 was a very successful game. It did kind of win almost every award that was going in the months following release. COD5, COD6 are very good but have issues as I am sure the new COD7(black ops) will.

I think to compare the COD series to aunnual releases of sports simulations is not really that valid. A football pitch is still a football pitch regardless, and yes as you say Kateryne, a lot of it is to do with a bit more graphic detail. With the COD series you do get different wars and different maps. It never feels stale when you play a new COD game, it does feel like a new war, new maps and different weapons to get the grips of. In sports simulations they certainly do have the Version 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 feeling year by year.

The box next to us as an offer for CoD servers for £9/M (30 slot) if we have people interested in BO, maybe we could do it?

It certainly does, on PS3 at the least (and I hear things aren't exactly sunshine and flowers on 360 or PC either). Plenty of bugs are starting to make themselves apparent, and the online thing is a laggy mess at the moment. You've maybe got a fifty/fifty chance of finding a game in the lobby, fifty/fifty that it'll start up correctly and then another fifty/fifty that the game finds a new host when the host (who is always on the opposite, losing, team) leaves (and he will leave). So your chances of finding a decent game are down around 12.5%, and I can guarantee you that in that single game where nothing breaks ... you can't shoot for peanuts.

Theatre mode gets two thumbs up! It certainly beats /record demo1 ... /stoprecord ... /demo ... what the fuck did I call it again? Is it in the right folder? Damn, I want to see that kill again, but no rewind! That would have looked great in slo-mo ...

I've honestly had no problem with BO online, minus the campers and the people who go "amg I'm being shot at! *lies down*" reccomend it loads.
