[COMPLETE] More peeople on IRC?

Hey admins,

I think we could get more people on IRC by having a link somewhere on the page that automatically starts up IRC. The link could be "irc://irc.quakenet.org:6667/thehaven".

It could be included in the new Rage? What you think?

I don't really think there is a need to get people on IRC.

People will come on if they want to plus there are many other ways that some people prefer to use to communicate to other memebrs of THN e.g. Xfire, msn,Teamspeak,Skype etc. These are all ways that lots of THN members prefer rather than IRC.

I agree with macca. Personally i see no realy point for THN to have a chat room. We have TS and we can have discussions in there which is also more personal beccause you can hear there voice. While IRC you can get any idiot on bamming you up. if you give me very good reason why IRC better - except you can slap people with fish then maybe i could see the point in it. But im thinking it will be hard to think of anything which TS doesnt really offer.

The discussion gets recorded in written form? :p

Unfortunately Fi$hy, even though I love IRC and all, you can save xfire and msn conversations in written form too :)

IRC is better as you can have group discussions more easily. MSN and XFire's multi-person conversations are horrid, and TS with 20+ people in the room can either get very noisy or you dont get much time to speak. IRC, if someone talks at the same time as you, so what? You just don't read their line. Plus, it means you can speak to lots of people without a microphone :)

DCC (Direct Client Connection or something) is the protocol for sending stuff over IRC, which is a darn sight quicker then MSN! And you can write your own scripts, so that when you set yourself to away, and someone says your nickname, it can get recorded and saved for you to read later.

Etc.

Whats the point in having tons of people on IRC if everybody is going to type stuff but the other people are just going to ignore it?

If you want to send someone something there are much quicker ways than IRC, for example FTP.

And I really wouldn't waste several hours writing a script (not that I know how) to record something that someone has said to you. If your not there then you can talk to them later or send them a PM or an email

There is no problem with communication in THN so I see no point in having links popping up to get on to IRC.

There's some nostalgia with the IRC channel macca. Our channel has been around near the birth of the THN community.
I don't think it's important to get more people to idle on IRC, but I wouldn't like to see it dissapear (not that it can anyway).

Interesting to see how people are so bloody opposed to a link pointing out we have an irc channel. If you don't like irc, don't join. Pretty simple in my eyes...

I allowed the comedy site to have a fecking java IRC client for this very reason! :) :p If you want to join in IRC without having to install extra software, sign up to THN comedy and use the java client, and if you decide that IRC is for you then download a proper client. It's really that simple.

Could someone with an installed IRC application that'll understand the irc:// protocol test the following link and let me know, please?

Peachy. Thanks Big D.

Link added under the THN Network category called "THN IRC". Sorted.

I think a link is not a bad idea - I'll make sure there is one in the FAQ somewhere which would be the most appropriate place for it to go.

As for the rest of the opinions on the pro's/con's of irc - I'm definately pro and its a great place for rapid discussion when teamspeak is not an option (i.e. when I'm booted into linux :)).

Or at work? And you don't want people to hear your conversation?

that too - I can easily make irc look like a shell console - or even use irc from the shell console :)
