so from the little that I could glean from that, the mobo/CPU/heatsink/fan and PSU is already fitted and they need to install and cable up, in what appears to NOT be a tool-free case:

An optical drive
A HDD
2 sticks of RAM
a Graphics card
and some other PCI type card that looked like possibly a network card
and then hook up the cables for power, monitor, mouse, keyboard and network

...And the guy wins $10k for his trouble O.O

*starts practicing*

Pretty much.

mobo/cpu/heatsink/psu all seem to be installed already (including any fiddly front panel headers). All they do is put the various drives in, screw them in, stick the ram in, plug the power connector into the mobo, and turn it on.

4mins and he wins 10 grand. I reckon I could have a reasonable stab at beating that now without practice. With practice I really don't see it being that hard at all.
They have done everything that takes any time already.

That's not building a PC.

And they have instructions, my question is what was the dude who took 18mins doing for the other 14minutes?

Being a div.

Very true though - in no way is that building a PC.

Maybe one of the exhibitors should do a "build a pc" competition at iseries events, but where youre properly doing it, none of this fannying around with stuff preinstalled :p

Watch again... It's a charity event.

last time i looked, charity events didnt include things like "im going to give you $10k for doing a fairly simple task". they were more "buy some raffle tickets to win a tin of beans!"

just think of how much that 10k$ would have helped the kids.

That cheque was made out to the Charity; Wol you muppet!

I raged a long time before the end and stopped watching :p

so if the money was for the charity.... whats this "computer building" competition shit got to do with it?

To be fair, it also says it quite clearly in the three sentences under the video...

To be fair, when I watch videos like that, the text around it is usually just white noise.

I do also particularly hate giant gimmicks around donating money to charity.
