Convince me...

... World of Warcraft. Undoubtedly the most popular game on these forums, and very very widely played. Now my main PC will have an internet connection when I get back to the UK, and I know that my laptop will run WoW, so... my question is this: is it actually worth playing? Is it worth the outlay firstly for the game, and then the subscription?

So here's what you have to do. Sell it to me, and if there is enough response I will get it, most probably while I'm still here in India... I'll download it and begin playing before I reach familiar shores. Anyone up for the challenge?

Edit: By the way, Blizzard's free guest passes system appears to be down, and judging from the forums it looks like it's been down for a while. I might have to dig out my two year old trial key I have back home...

The main thing is, do you have the time? If you don't have time, don't expect to be playing with the same people. People that play more than you will shoot well ahead and you'll end up questing by yourself or doing group quests with random people. If you have the time, you'll love playing with THN'ers. If you don't have time then it may be quite boring for you..

It is a fun game and you will meet a lot of new people. Do not expect those people to be in THN though!

Nanor got it right when he said people race ahead. Everyone groups up according to similar time commitments more than anything. One of the things you realise early on in World of Warcraft is whether you are playing it for the end game raids (HUGE time commitment), or whether you are a casual quester.

Its a fun game but if you are running and not sprinting then the majority of hardcore players will always be ahead of you doing things that are not available to you.

By all means try it for a month and see where you stand in the time stakes. It is a very visually appealing game with a lot going for it, if you choose to you can sink every hour of every day into it and still not be anywhere near the top tier though.

i currently don't play WoW based on the trail that i played about 18 months ago, in which i played 180 hours over 10 days. I could see that i would most likely continue like that so decided to stop playing for the good of my coursework and my health. however depending on when you start i could be persuaded to give it another try for a few days and see how it works out.

You may have noticed but about 6 weeks ago I stopped playing WoW. Why? I had gotten to a point where I required a MASSIVE time investment (read: ALL of my spare time) just to get that sense of progression within the game, and should you enjoy the game and get that far you will eventually reach such a point. This is why alot of people are addicted to it and spend too much time playing it! Those stories you hear of WoW widows? It's ALL true.

Don't get me wrong, I've had some DAMN good times in that game, so I'm not saying it isn't going to be fun, and the social aspect is also damn fun, especially when you get someone making a monster pull of 8 mobs in the Shadow Labyrinth and I manage to save the group by using fear after everyone in the group starts screaming over teamspeak that its a wipe and we're gonna die... (very fun moment... I was shouting at the mobs basically saying "GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY HEALER!!!" :D Managed to keep em away though and we survived, albeit with 2 casualties... who were like "WTF!?!? How did you survive???" :D:D:D)

Good points:
  • Very Immersive game
  • Lots (and i mean LOTS) to do and see
  • Very social game
  • Good for a quick hour's blast soloing or 8 hours in various different groups.
  • Although the game may now be considered "old" although it isn't cutting edge in its graphics it has its own style which fits perfectly and still looks damn good to this day.
  • The first time you go for a flight from one end of the world to the other is an amazing expreience, showing you some damn good visuals andshowing you just how pretty the world is... I especially like the snow-covered areas.

Bad points:
  • Very Immersive game! - What I mean by this is that if you like it you may end up getting to a point where you are spending ALL of your time playing the game... Which dependant on yourself is either a good or bad thing...
  • You will eventually reach a point where you will have seen 95% of the game, and then you have to depend on other people and also a MASSIVE time commitment to get any further in the "end game" (as we call it - basically the point where you have hit level 70, done the 5-man instances and all the solo content to death and now only have the raids to do...)

If you do decide to play then I wouldn't mind helping you now and then through difficult quests to get your character levelled up.
Slowly but surely you will become a high enough level to play with all the THNers, if you can spare the time :)

Well, I gave in to the dark side. WoW is installing now... thanks KC for your trial key, and so I shall shortly be joining the ranks of the Horde on Scarshield Legion server, probably as a mage. Now I just need to think of a name....

Dezmond sounds as good as anything :D

Though not really for a Horde player, that's more of a name for a human I think... Then again it would fit on an undead mage :D

Nice!

What's not so nice is that after downloading the game it appears to be the US version, which won't allow me to login with a European account (it doesn't recognise it).... so now I'm downloading the gb language file and that should hopefully sort it...

IIRC all you need to change is a file called "realmlist.wtf", which in the US version will point to the us servers. you can manually change this so it points at the EU servers (its a text file). cant remember what exactly to change though so try a little googling and also the WoW forums.

Contents of realmlist.wtf in the root of your WoW installation i.e:

C:/program files/World of Warcraft/realmlist.wtf

set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
set patchlist eu.version.worldofwarcraft.com

Don't worry, it's all fine now. Cheers for all help given, it's now up and running, there's a level 4 troll mage called Dezkhul running around Ratchet at the moment... :)

Yep indeed it is.

Well, I'm now level 5, and have left the Valley of Trials, and am now in the place that's just north of there (I forget it's name). I can't actually join the guild on a trial pass account, however if any kind souls would be willing to show me the ropes or take me along on an adventure then feel free to add me to your friends list, my character is listed using the new WoW character feature of the forums :)
