I gone done it...
Through surprising chance I had a little windfall that's given me enough money to buy my own Xbox 360. Yay for me! Means I'll be keeping a close eye on the 360 gaming market too, from now on.
So, first off the block (and one that Tetsuo hasn't made it to yet)... Dead Rising. Not yet released, Gamespot have an interesting preview of this zombie-themed mania.
From what I can tell, you play a reporter who has got himself inside a town where (almost) everyone is now a zombie. You end up in the central mall, around which the entire game takes place, and you need to survive 72 hours with the zombies. However, it does not appear to be one of those serious survival horror zombiefests. Instead, from the footage I've seen so far, it takes a slightly lighter look at the genre.
Imagine beating zombies to death with a cash register, or knockin' 'em off with golf balls... maybe doing tricks on your skateboard while avoiding the hordes? The meat of the missions in the game, however, appear to be based around "Scoop" missions. These are opportunities provided to you over your walkie-talkie where you can go places, do things and take a photo of your deeds. One video example I saw was placing silly hats on a bunch of zombies and then photoing the madness.
There are a few survivors out there still... a couple of Japanese tourists, the lunatic who won't let you into the hunting store (to get them beautiful guns... bastard!) and it looks like you'll need to figure out how to deal with these guys at some point. However, the game claims to be fairly freeform. I'm put in mind of a slightly more restricted Grand Theft Auto, where causing havoc is recommended (lawnmower those zombies, anyone?) but the framework of missions will ultimately need to be done to progress... but you can do it at your own pace, running around randomly in between (or even on missions).
Sounds like a giggle to me. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
