Defcon 1.2 patch: MOD SUPPORT!

Well, in a similar way to releasing patches for Uplink and Darwinia to add mod support, Introversion has released Defcon 1.2 (here's the news story). This patch adds the ability to easily switch between different mod - which can be anywhere from map replacements to completely different units, sounds, and map! What's more, a fan has already made a map editor to make the modding even easier - if you have seen the map files for Defcon, you could cry at trying to make them yourself by hand!

Here's a look at some of Iv's favourite maps and why. Special pointing goes to the Australia mod for BiG_D, who (in the beta test tournament) decided that the passive Australians deserved to be nuked though it didn't help his score at all! :)

Here are some of the best MODs we've seen so far:

Up until now the Australians have evaded the thermonuclear debate, peacefully sitting out of the daily genocide. Not anymore thanks to this new map.

Ever fancied settling the score between England, Scotland and Wales? Now you can with thermonuclear fire.

Think outside the box; take your nuclear vendetta into the realms of outer-space and knock your opponents out of orbit.

The most surreal form of thermonuclear war yet; hack into each other’s cyber brains and blow them away!

There is also an awesome christmas mod (which you may have seen), but there are a few bugs with it and the latest patch.

Enjoy!

Ghost Hack (the bottom one, which looks like brains) is a complete mod, with new graphics for the units, and possibly new sounds (not sure about the sounds), so they aren't just new maps :p

Edit - it also replaces the text within game.

Contribute something DECENT to this thread Psi instead of trying to correct people in ways you see fit.

Thanks for the links elD, I'll check these out sometime soon :)

Did you play online, or just against the computer? Against computer it's a pretty average game. When you get online, and starting forming alliances, and backstabbing just to try and save a million more people, or to get that one nuke on a city with population 50 million, it's the awesome thing in the world.

The fact that you feel every person's death when an enemy nuke lands on London, or watching pretty helplessly as your anti-air is shooting at the wave of bombers coming towards you and your fleets while pleading with the enemy for a cease-fire, gives this game one of the most brilliant atmosphere's ever.

And the little things help too, like the almost silent low rumbling you can just make out when a nuke lands.

God, it's a brilliant game when you get online! :D

Try playing as Europe. It's easy to defend yourself, but as that's a general tactic online, most people go for Europe at the start. I saved BiG_D's Moscow from being hit in the beta tournament, and it was the best thing ever shooting down the enemy nukes while the guy was just sending chat messages like "COME ON! ONE HAS TO GET THROUGH!" and the likes.

AH! It's GREAT! :D:D:D

I played a bit of the, eh.. demo.. and I didn't really enjoy it. It seemed a bit place your fleets and stuff then launch a few nukes, not very tactical! :p

Yes, "Do stuff". By those standards I don't think there's any game that's tactical. I think you do stuff in most games.

Again, get online and get the alliances going. Which you can't do with the unofficial "demo" :p

Remember that even the demo will let you play in a 6 player game if no other demo players are in the game. So just scout the server list for a game with 4 or more people and no demo players. Easy :)

Well, hot on the heels of 1.2, Introversion have released the beta of version 1.3. This allows an Alliance "whiteboard" (an overlay onto which you can draw battle tactics, etc.) which everyone in your alliance sees.

Enjoy the continuing goodies from Iv!

Patch 1.3 is now officially released out of beta. Play a nice game of hangman while you wait for your nukes to drop using the alliance whiteboard. Joy!

I (unsurprisingly) think it is well worth £9! Multiplayer is awesome against people (not the AI which gets very predictable very quickly). The whole backstabbingness is so amazingly cool. You can never really trust your allies, as you think that they may turn on you at just the wrong moment, so it's always in your mind that you can do the same to them! It's brilliant at how well the game makes you evil. It really is. And then there's double bluffing to find all of the enemies silo locations and the likes! It's awesome!

Edit - Oh yeah, if you get it, I will finally have someone to play with regularly! :D And maybe we can get some other THNers involved too!

I've got the full version (pre ordered, in fact), I just don't get the chance to play online any more very much :(. Much recommended by the way: vector graphics mod and dark green theme. Oh yeah... wargames ftw :D
