[Tech] Dell 1520 troubleshoot Question

Hi there, I think this is my very first post :/ Was hoping I cold get little tech advice from someone.

I recently bought a Dell 1520 lappy from eBay, and the machine seems to look new and came in original packaging.

However I did receive a substitute charge with it and not the original Dell charger and for some reason the only way i seem to be able to use the laptop is on the mains power, if i pull the charger out of the laptop the laptop turns off the same as a computer would when pulling the power out.

I have Vista installed on the machine and when I hover over the battery icon on the taskbar it says 0% (plugged in, not charging). Now I am hoping this may be due to something stupid I am doing or maybe its the charger, however the guy i bought it off never mentioned anything about the charger not working, he did actually put on the auction that the battery lasts up to 2.5 hours.

I have tried removing the battery and the HDD in hope that maybe it would work afterwards, but haven't had much luck.

Is there anything you guys can think of suggesting or maybe even someone else has had this problem before with Vista? I dunno.. any help would be appreciated

also, I forgot to mention the charger has a watt setting, so you can choose what you want it to put out, its currently putting out 19 but can go up to a max of 24, I'm afraid to change it at the moment because I don't want to cause any damage to my battery.

Thanks allot to whomever responds

Get a new battery, that is the issue I had, replaced it and now it works fine.

Or negative feed back ;)

Check the battery is seated correctly. It sounds like the battery is dead to me.

damn... that sucks... I have taken the battery out and put it back in a few times, seems to be sitting correctly. Omg, I can't believe I was sold a faulty laptop! Grrrrr.

Does anyone know how about complaining about a buying selling goods not as advertised?

thanks allot =)

I think what she means Haven is the fact that the battery was advertised to last "up to 2.5 hours" and so the fact that it is dead means that it's not as advertised. I think you may have the right to demand a new one from the person who sold you it, since they falsely advertised it, although I'm not really to sure, Not 100% of the ins and outs of consumer rights =).
