Der Mac ist überlegen! (Or Mac propaganda)

Well.. I watched this video of all the I'm a Mac and I'm a PC ads. It did appear however to be a pile of nonsense.

They're obviously targeting the less computer savvy of the population. For each of the statements Mac gives there are plenty of counters. I mean, for the one about "I can just run out of the box, I don't need to install graphics drivers", well.. you don't really need to use them anyway..

Likewise they're portraying the PC as a serious OS that is only really used for work and isn't used for recreation. Hmm.. how many of us game for work? If I was given an OS and asked to label one as the recreational OS I'd say Windows. I always thought of Mac as the work OS?

What about the one where PC keeps crashing? Who crashes that often? When's the last time you had a crash? I have an uptime of 1 Days, 10 Hours, 46 Minutes, 39 Seconds and not too long ago had an uptime of about 5 days and could play games with no problem and my system performance didn't hinder.

The one about PC upgrading to Vista? He needs a whole new processor and other really really expensive stuff?! Windows Ultimate (The dearest you can get IIRC) requires very little:

  • 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 GB of system memory
  • 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
  • Support for DirectX 9 graphics

Not exactly breaking the bank there? You can get a fresh new very basic PC for internet use and emailing from dell.co.uk for £359 (Second one from the left) and that's with everything you need!

What's your opinion on this? Do you agree with this propaganda?

Haven't seen em but the only reason your computer would constantly crash is if you didn't look after it properly. The same would happen on a mac.

Its an advert, you said so yourself ... in effect you've answered your own question.

in some defences of your points...

Try running vista ultimate on that spec nanor, and most of it will drop out to lower level features, or just run VERY slowly. Vista ultimate on 1gb of ram isn't nice :(

Actually crashing a mac is quite difficult, the individual app is ok, but creating a kernel panic (think BSOD) is damn'd hard work. I've had one so far, and that was in an install when i tried to install an incompatible version of OS X, so thats probably fair!

haven has the ultimate point "it's an advert"

I think their advertising focus is on the use of a PC as a media system. Need to remember that we're all advanced users, by the standards of any "average" PC user, because gaming usually requires that we know just that little bit more to make things work smoothly, get a few extra frames per second. Most of the people I support outside of work use their PC for web browsing and email and that's pretty much it.

As a by the by, one should be measuring a decent uptime in weeks and months, not hours and days, though perhaps that's my feeling looking at this as a one-time server admin.

....ah yes, uptime. It would be nice to have. After I've sent in my motherboard and RAM again, I might even get it.

Put a mark of some kind on them, like a small black dot with a felt-tip pen or something... that way you can make sure that they aren't sending you the same ram chips back...

At this point I'd like to announce that all MACs are inherently broken. Now I was happy to be disillusioned on this point when Vibs' bought his MAC and I said from the outset that being a MAC meant it was broken, however as Vibs' MAC was actually broken bob wins and MACs lose. I prefer windows plain and simple, personally not a big fan of OSX theres nought wrong with it but I know windows and am happy that way. As said they are adverts they have to try and make pcs seem rubbish to try and justify the obscene price tags they put on their machines

ooo another most important point of all, the mitchell and webb ads are much better, they are along the same lines but mitchell and webb rock.
