I am slightly worried as I saw an article on the new Windows Vista that will be coming out towards the end of the year and it will include the new DirectX10 technology, problem is I have just bought a Nvidia 7800GTX and i dont know whether it will support directX10? If you know please tell me because i cant find anything on the internet stating it does.

Gibs a 7800 GTX is near top-spec so I'd expect so, also just because windows supports something doesn't mean develoupers will actually utilise it. :p

I think you should be pitying those who run 6200's :p (ooh-rah!)

from what i know neither ATI nor Nvidia have released any DX10 cards yet. considering DX10 doesnt come out until Windows Vista does id be surprised if the 7800GTX has it
dont take my word for it tho, i may be wrong

by the time DX10 becomes mainstream and developers start requiring that you have a graphics card that supports DX10, the 7800 will most likely be either obsolete or very old... so I wouldn't worry about it! Especially as Windows Vista will still be a long way off....

Okay... gotta intervene.

Windows Vista- planned release date: End of 2006.

Requirements for 'Aero Glass' interface - DirectX 9.0 compatible card. (ie, full pixel shader 2.0 support).
Requirements for 'Aero Lite' interface - as above.
Requirements for 'Aero' (ie like windows xp) - same as XP visual engine, with more memory.

Your 7800 is a DirectX 9.0 part, however, it could theoretically be DirectX 10 compliant, since the pixel shader 3.0 support was only very recently added to the directX specification - we'll have to wait and see once the standard is ratified.

However, rest assured, your card WILL work in Vista - along with just about every other graphics card in existence (yes, even integrated chipsets - though don't expect any 3D effects on those!).

And yes, before you ask, DirectX 10 will be backported to Windows XP, and you should also be able to safely install it no matter what your hardware is (yes, even you at the back with your Geforce 2!). Of course, whether you can make full use of it is another matter... :)

In short: don't worry, just wait and see. Remember: Microsoft actually want people to run their OS's (even though it may not always seem that way!) because, after all, they need to make money and to start making ludicrous hardware demands gives them a vastly smaller market to sell their product to. It's all simple economics, really. :)
