I believe this is generally considered a good idea, yes.
On a more serious note, yes, most tanks I know of find themselves needing off-spec gear of some kind, whether for healing or for DPS. While there is definitely a shortage of tanks, they also happen to be the least represented role in a typical raid group, which means that raid viability is very dependant on having the exact number of needed tanks available.
It stands to reason that, the more tanks we have that can off-spec as something else, the more flexible we are, and thus, the stronger our team is.

By all means try and get some shiny off-spec pieces with spare badges and from Heroics, and any off-spec pieces from raids that nobody needs main-spec. But I wouldn't get your hopes up too much about mainspec pieces from ICC guild runs juuust yet; most of the time, the plate pieces go pretty quickly.

I see a bit of you in me! This is why I started healing on my priest ( and I fell in love with priest healing <3 )Just grind some nice gear ( I do a random everyday and you can always join, I always state it in /g before I que in) and look online for rotations and specs for your dps. It has helped me a lot. My dps jumped from 2,5K to 3,5K (which was pretty high back in those days
)You can still stay tank as mainspec, but a dps (or healing) offspec makes you flexible for raiding

I meant more that I was raging OTT considering none of it actually affects me anymore
