Dwarf Fortress

I've been playing this game on and off for about a year now and it's bloody awesome. I can't quite put it into words (read:cba) so I shall direct you here! Read up!

I many of you will actually download it, and those of you who do I'll be mega surprised if you get past the learning curve, but for those of you who do you're in for a mega treat. :D

Ah, now I see I have Nanor to blame for the hours of lost productivity in the past 24 hours...

This game both annoys me and excites me at the same time.

It's a superb game but when you fall victim to a tantrum spiral it gets you a bit flustered. Still, nothing beats kicking elves of bridges.

I can only imagine how much that guy hates the world in order to inflict that interface on it.

It will do that quite bad unless you use a graphics pack. Might I recommend the mayday pack which is actually quite pleasing to look at.

OH NO! That kills one of my big complaints with DF by making it not ASCII.

Now all they need is proper empire management tools and I'll never do anything else ever again.

DF is pseudo-ascii. With these graphics packs you'll see some tiles be used for more than one thing which can make things slightly annoying. If Toady (the dev) really wanted to he could make each tile unique which would be very awesome. :)

Anyone done anything crazy yet?

Does getting distracted when I really need to do a delivery for the end of today count as crazy?

So I made a fortress and made a pretty awesome shack before you enter my fort filled with war dogs. If a hostile stands on a pressure pad it opens the door and the dogs come running out to chew the offenders. That worked great the first time, but they killed all my dogs. I thought instead of waiting for new dogs to grow up and be trained I'll start a dwarf army named after various people from THN. At the start there was I, Nanor Erithgidthur, a professional marksdwarf who single handedly repelled an attack of 5 goblins. Then there was Sully Gidthurkadol (Gizmo-5), another marksman, who is yet to see any battle. Finally there was Waterproofbob Vumomoltar Nekutz with absolutely no fighting ability as he hadn't been trained.

Freshly equipped with copper chainmail, a copper sword and a copper shield, bob decided to take a walk to the front of my fortress to get some plump helmet wine when more goblins decided to ambush the fort to try and steal the stuff the elves were selling. Seeing as bob and no fighting experience at all I tried to call him back. Too late. I couldn't send him any reinforcements as Gizmo and I were sleeping so it was up to bob to die as the first fortress martyr. Apparently not. Instead bob went into a martial trance killing 7 goblins single handedly. He cut off one of their arms, one of their heads then when there was no-one left to kill he went and got some wine.

Good old bob. :)

EDIT: So, er, I sent Ronin and Bob out to kill the goblin invaders without any proper ranged support. They were doing well. Bob managed to throw a goblin into a wall, shattering his skull and Ronin was covered in Goblin blood. Then Bob got shot in the arm with an arrow, breaking his arm. Ronin was shot through the head and killed instantly. Bob tried to crawl away but was beset upon by 5 goblins who tore off his hand. A friendly human helped him but unfortunately he bled to death.

Oh well, they can be replaced. Take this spear, Trax.

There's a tutorial? I know there are tutorial videos, and they are like 3 hours in total of something crazy!

Tutorial? What tutorial? My dwarves are on the brink of starvation and I can't figure out how to get farms working (on a regular basis).

I have found the wiki, which certainly helps but I'm still having a nightmare with some parts of production and construction. Like why my Mason won't build the damn Leatherworking shop!

What you want to do, Ronin, is build a farm inside on a patch of clay or soil. Build it at about 7x7 tiles. Have a food stockpile near it and a seed stockpile closeby as well.

As for your workshops; they are only built by whichever profession will use it, so you need to have a leatherworke to build it. If you press Q and hover over the workshop you will see "Needs leatherworking to continue...". If you have a leatherworker it may well be that construction has been suspended for some reason. It will tell you when you hover over it and you can unsuspend it by pressing S.

My favourite part about this game is that it is so CPU intensive I need to set my winamp process to high priority to stop the music from skipping.
