Electronic version of rubik style cube

Generally a request for thoughts on an idea I had.

I saw my other half playing: http://www.microgames.info/game_info.php?products_id=205 and I thought "hey, I could probably make one of those"

RGB LEDs for each of the things, with some form of button, mounted on some PCBs.

Thoughts / ideas? How would I distinguish between the end / start points, and the points that the user has put in. Or how would I show the current selected colour. And how would I show squares which could be used / squares which are disabled.

My only thought is - damn you, Wol. I'm playing that and meant to be sleeping.
Other than that: Inner and outer led rings or something to distinguish start/finish. would be possible to have white as available squares?
Tricky to make, but would be quite cool.

doing inner / outer LED rings is a bit tricky. I was thinking that each button would be about half an inch square, so having "rings" of RGB LEDs would be a bit tricky.

I actually thought of that and then thought "nah, cos you wouldnt be able to show which colour was selected" .... *headdesk*

Just need to find a nice way of doing an RGB led button thing *-)
