so, has anyone looked at Endless space? I like me some 4x, but I like the eXterminate bit the least. This looks like it could be fun, anyone else?

According to today's shoutbox, there are already a number of people with it, and it's certainly on my radar at the moment too...

Trax and I spent 'til 03:00 last night playing. And then only stopped because I had to sleep. Combat is important, I think, but I'm finding it quite easy to get on with. You can resolve battles automatically, or you can play a three part rock-paper-scissors style card game (with accompanying 3D battle graphics) to see if you can affect the outcome a bit, which goes better as your civilisation becomes better at war, or has more experienced admirals. I'm actually really glad that I don't have to arse about in battles too much, but enjoy doing the card game bit.

But that's early days yet. I might have another look tonight if Trax is about and I can stay awake.

Youthful vigour, I think. And shocking quantities of sugar.

So, worth noting that if you're playing multiplayer and the Steam network drops then so does your multiplayer game and, with it, everything since your last auto-save. I think it auto-saves every turn, so that's not a disaster, but last night I think Trax and I might have lost around 5-10 minutes of stuff with Steam being flaky.

I get up and then wander about like a zombie.

Also not having caffeine in my diet helps ;)

yeah I like it so far, but I find it's a little hard to grasp (one game in, that is) what the different research paths do and lead to.

The research is moderately interwoven, as well, which adds to the complexity. For example, to build heavier hulls you need better construction materials. To find those materials, you need to have researched how to discover them, and then you actually need access to them in your empire. The hulls and material discover researches are in different trees. Actually, I quite like that, but it does make it harder to figure where to spread your research.

I've got my head around most everything apart from the tech tree to decide what's the best route to take with that... third night in a row playing until 3 am D:
