Fi$hy's pining for the glory days of BF2, though I have accepted it's dead, and as I've lost my CD key, I'm not especially keen to have to re-purchase a game I already technically "own".

Ok, here's me:

Multiplayer games that I've loved:
Call of Duty
Call of Duty: United Offensive
Battlefield Vietnam
Battlefield 2
BF2 SF

Mulitplayer games that I've hated
Call of Duty 2
Battlefield 2142

Now the more savy of ya, might notice an interesting contradiction, loving and hating the same series.

As for an explanation - BF2142 just simply didn't have the instant wow factor that BF2 held, maybe I never gave it a chance from a "play as a team" POV - which arguably is what made BF2.

COD2 on the other hand, whilst supposedly the same as COD1, seems (and still does) to either sit at one of two extremes, either "Search and Destroy" dominated by One shot rifle quickdraws, or any other mode, which seems to lack any rifles and just has endless sub-machine gunning. Where was the middle ground - the holy grail of rock paper scissors .

--------

So does anyone have any ideas of a good multiplayer game that's still played (from a FPS POV). I'm considering COD4, as I love the demo - but I loved the Single player side of COD2, the multiplayer seemed completely different, should I give BF2142 another chance (seeing as 1, it's the same root game as BF, and 2, it's blumming cheap!)

Team Fortress 2 is worth a look.

Others will also point you at Call of Duty 4.

Crysis, on the other hand, is probably only worth it for the single player.

You might care to check out some mods for games, of course. Insurgency for Half Life 2 or Project Reality for Battlefield 2 might appeal, the latter reliant on a working BF2 DVD of course...

My impression is that Battlefield 2142 has had its day here so it's probably not worth picking that up to play regularly with THN.

I'll stick with my first two offerings: TF2 and CoD4.

You're in luck. I still play BF2 and even better (for you - not so much for me) my disk had a crack in it recently and I had to buy a new copy. Being a clever person, I kept the old manual and so I have a spare and perfectly legal key. Check your PM's, and if I'm around give me a shout and I'll give you a game or two.

As far as 2142 goes I have exactly the same opinion. It just didn't have the same impact as BF2.

The main FPS that are being played here at the moment are Team Fortress 2 and CoD4. I don't have CoD4 (yet) so I can't comment but I do have TF2. At first I wasn't that impressed by it especially when compared with BF2, but after playing for a while it's starting to grow on me. It's a lot different to BF2 in that it's a lot faster paced, with smaller and fairly contained maps with not huge options for improvisation, but the classes complement each other well, people tend to use teamwork quite well and it's good fun. Even dying in game has it's good points what with seeing various bits lying around labelled as "Your Foot", "Your Head" etc and with it listing a good point of that spawn (like "you equalled your record for kill assists that life"). It's worth getting in my opinion.

I'd say go for TF2 or COD4 as well, I played and loved 2142 into the ground but it is well and truly done now. I don't know if you'll have the same issue as you did with COD2 but I thoroughly enjoy COD4 and never played COD2. TF2 is a great team game if you want one and is one of those games that is easy to play but quite hard to master, unless you are piacular of course.

I'd say get the orange box anyway just for portal but TF2 is also a lot of fun to play

Thank you very much Wraith, I obviously have no excuse not to re-install BF2 (unless of course something amazing arrives in 15mins, though I doubt it)

Either way, The Orange Box, I'd heard of, and had been interested in TF2, and also thinking about it, seeing as I've never played Half-life (shock, shock horror) maybe now is the time to start!

You haven't played Half-Life?

You haven't played PORTAL??

You require The Orange Box immediately. TF2 is simply a really nice bonus.

EDIT: Big steam sale from now to Jan 1st, and Orange Box is 25% off. Best jump at the opportunity!

possibly world in conflict might be worth a look. I'm thinking of getting it myself. It's supposedly very awesome.

I'm going with COD4, TF2 and Unreal 3 as my main teamplay fps for a little while.

I also have Crysis but I'm not interested in the multiplay functionality at all in that.
