Fortress Year Five - Pretty peaceful except for the end.

28th Obsidian, 1059

Well, I've arrived yet again at this gods-forsaken hole in the ground, they tell me the goblins are all gone now but I'll believe that when I don't see it!

First thing I noticed when I arrived was: more corpses! Yay, I love dead bodies greeting me at the entrance to my home, so I've given orders that we build more coffins as soon as possible, before we get more damn ghosts. . . .

Also changed the farming so that the seeds we have most of will be planted and put more people to work on the fields.

More bins, barrells, and beds have been added to the list of construction too, so everything should be ship-shape soon!

22nd Slate 1059

You know, they called me the Under-taker before, I think it's becoming my lot in life! There are 158 corpses on the map, I'm building coffins as quickly as I can, and quelling ghosts too!

There's supposed to be a catapult somewhere but I can't find it. . . .

Plenty of food being prepared and planted, so we won't be starving, trying to get some alcohol made too, hopefully!

We have hundreds of cabinets for no adequately explained reason either so I've started putting them in the plebe's bedrooms, I guess they can use them.

27th Slate 1059

"Some migrants have arrived, despite the danger"

21 new Dwarves have joined us in our hell-pit. I hope I'll have enough room for them all. . . .

14th Felsite 1059

Traders have arrived! Let us see if I can unload all this junk on them!

Elves. That is all.

24th Felsite, 1059

Oh boy! A new masterpiece! It's a. . . bag.

"On the item is an image of goblins and dwarves in shale. The goblins are massacring the dwarves. The artwork relates to the defeat of The Dangers of Swimming of the Tre True Lances and destruction of Safehomes of Nets by the Terror of Racing in the early spring of 1052."

Great. the PTSD begins.

25th Felsite, 1059

I think the Clothier was prescient. Goblin ambush! Right outside our walls. Setting up a militia now. Maybe the Elves at the trade depot will kill them, or at least die too. . . .

12th Hematite 1059

Well, it looks like the Goblins have all been killed by our brave Dwarves! I think I will keep them on active/training forever now, the goblins appeared right by the walls, so it's a good idea for them to be equipped from the get-go!

Down to 36 dwarves, could be worse I guess. They killed off the animal dissectors and soap-makers, so, win-win.

14th Malachite, 1059

More migrants! Back up to 43, not as many as we had when the last migrant wave arrived, but hey, we're not dead!

5th Galena, 1059

Aww, Alath Athelrimad, the Militia Commander has given birth to a baby boy, in the barracks. Now, it will be funny to watch her fighting goblins with a baby on her back.

18th Galena, 1059

Human caravan here! Huzzah! People who won't cry and run away if I give them something made of freaking wood! This should be good for our seeds!

Excellent! Plenty of seeds, food, armour, and some weapons bought!

6th Sandstone, 1059

More migrants! Up to 52 dwarves now. I think that's exactly the number of beds we have.

16th Timber, 1059

A caravan from Edem Boshut! Let's see if they want to trade anything shiny with us.

6th Opal, 1059

"Othsinnazom Keshshakostar, or 'Boweddreams the Sweltering Burial', a gypsum mechanism" was built by one of our Dwarves, for some reason.

27 & 28th Obsidian, 1060

So, things have been going pretty good, finished the graveyard, smoothed most of the walls and floors in the important areas and our troops have been training very hard in preparation for Goblin ambushes. Speaking of ambushes: one on the 27th happened, but our warriors succeeded in slaughtering a couple and are chasing the rest away, only problem is that another ambush has just appeared at the entrance to our fortress, so there's now about 10 or so Goblins versus our 8 soldiers.

I have faith in these troops, but it's not my problem anymore! ;)

I suggest we get a second squad built and trained at some point soon, a new, and bigger barracks would be good too!

Here's the save file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/990930/region1-spr-1052-spr-spr-1060.zip

Should be up in about 5 minutes! Good luck whoever's next.

Oh gods, that's me. Not another goblin ambush. That still gives me a nightmares.

Well, I think I'm up next, which is probably for the best as handing this to Trax in mid battle seems like throwing him in the deep end. When the pool is filled with sharks. And lava.

Yup! There's about 7 Goblin Axemen and a bunch of lashers. Our troops did a good job of killing a few of the first ambush before the second one appeared. Which is good, but the only problem is that, well, the squad has run off in various directions while the second ambush is heading straight for the fortress.

I think I'll be sealing the gates and running the squad around until I can see a way of getting them home safely. I'm also going to work on a separate entrance that we can actually fill with traps, rather than the temporary surface fortress that has turned out to be not so temporary and not so secure.

Yup! There's an engraving in the Barracks too that has Dwarves weeping as they abandon the Fortress back in 1052. I suggest the next leader continue the engraving project, we'll get some gems considering the misery this place has suffered.
