the idea of it is that the music companies get a share of the profits made from ad revenue. I think that if this works, it is a bold step and is a massive step in the right direction for all people involved.

Do the tracks you download have any kind of DRM on em?

Yes, meaning (apparently) you can't use them with iTunes. The DRM means the company can track the downloads and plays of each song, so they can work out how much money goes to each Artist and Label.

Also, BBC says you lie about the labels being signed up. And, "Last Updated: Monday, 28 January 2008, 12:32 GMT" means it's newer! Still, we shall see!

Edit: Ignore

Still amazes me how people put up with 128bps sound quality. CD's were invented way back in 1980 and the sound quality off them is far superior to any MP3 file nowadays.

I pulled out a CD I bought back in 1992, it had a £12.99 label on it. Assuming a standard rate of inflation, that would be around £32 in todays money.

The point is, music has became very cheap because of the internet but the sound quality of CD's hasn't got worse.

I'm grateful I can get the CD's I want for under a tenner!!

I still buy all of my music too, though I do tend to find that if I was a specific song I will just go on to itunes and buy it !

The other thing to consider is that encoding techniques and file formats have progressed over the years... if only online stores offered all audio in Ogg format, we'd all be totally sorted for high sound quality!

For a period of time I only used Windows Media Lossless for ripping CD's and playing them on my 5.1 surround sound, but over time this has become less important, as long as the audio is at least 192kbps quality it generally plays well.

Man, way to get me interested in something only to smash my excitement into the ground. Guess I'll just have to keep waiting on a way to go from illegal to legal without breaking my bank.
