Gamejackal?

It all depends on to what extent your government is running the copyright lobby's errands.

And of course, whether this could be called "circumventing copy protection technologies" (which I believe it could).

Assume it's illegal. But I don't think that you should be worried, as long as you only use it to not have to switch cd's all the time (i.e. don't pass the cd's on to your friends when you got your copy).

It's hard to say. As DocBot indicates, it can be construed as circumvention of copy prevention and our fascist legislation makes that illegal, if I understand the current state of UK law correctly.

However, I also believe that it falls under the terms of fair use.

I've not seen a case on this that's gone to trial in the UK so it may be that UK legislation as applies to this may err on fair use. Or equally it may err on side of copy prevention. I couldn't say.

Personally, I think it's a fair use tool and used for personal use on legitimately purchased software I strongly doubt that anyone will spend the cash to prosecute. Used in conjunction with illegally acquired software and it's less a case of "is Game Jackal legal" and more a case of "you're stealing software" and that obviously puts you in hot water.

Pragmatically, the only review of it that I put any store in is Buffalo Hunter's recent success with it. I forget what game but if you trawl the forums you'll probably come up with the link. He may be able to provide a more detailed user's perspective on the software itself. Beside that, the chances of anyone coming after you for fairly using your legally purchased games seems fairly close to nil, to me.

I'd not flinch if I found I had need of Game Jackal for some reason. I find that DaemonTools and Alcohol 52% meet my needs, currently, however.
