Dominion: Dark Ages.
Looks to be a really interesting expansion providing variant 'curse' type negative cards, cards doing things with the trash pile, which is an interesting part of the game yet to be explored in detail. It's also going to provide alternative cards other than estates to start the game with, which could really mix up early play and strategies.

Not really around christmas but the games that I am looking forward to are Dark Souls for the superior platform the PC and Sleeping Dogs, a open world action adventure game with (promised) advanced combat options.

Can anyone actually think of a way to improve or innovate in football games, or sports games in general?

The only innovations I've seen in the last 10 years or so were in the World Cup 2002 game where 'star' players could trigger a little burst, or a powerful shot or pass. Made the gameplay slightly less generic, but broke any realism feel. The hit stick in madden was a good one, which allowed you to risk a big hit (or fluff) rather than a usual tackle. That one was definitely an improvement. They also had the QB vision cone, which might have been interesting, but was disastrously implemented, and everyone turned off.

I guess there's no need, since everyone seems to buy the games no matter what.

From year to year, there are rarely ever large changes in FIFA games. However, this year there was, and the game is much better for it - the way you control your defending players changed dramatically, and really rewards those who are good at it. In addition, there are generally an absolute smegload of "little" tweaks here and there each time that really do add up to make the game feel different, and (usually) much better than its predecessor.

Now that consoles are online, you also get roster changes throughout the year, so it's all about those little changes (and the occasional large change) that make the difference.

In reply to OP: Probably Borderlands 2 is the only game on my radar at the moment - I have no idea about any other new games I'll be interested in atm...
