If you're really addicted you will know that something's wrong, unless you're very ignorant. It's called the denial stage because you're aware, but don't want to face it.
For milder addictions you may not notice, but if you don't, then you could question how severely it affects your life, like the example of texting and mobile communications the article gave. Most persons can show some addictive, compulsive, autistic, schizophrenic, antisocial and a whole range of other behaviors in mild forms, it doesn't have to indicate a problem.
