When using the THN forums and posting up your ideas on whatever, it is important to follow a few simple rules:

Use proper spelling, punctuation and grammer!

For example: 'so i ws at dis party 1 nite nd i saw dis crazy foo eatin fire' is a No!
What you should type is: 'I was at this party one night and I saw a crazy fool eating fire!'

Do not insult other members!

Common sense really, but I just thought I would reiterate it. Making fun of anyones beliefs, religion, culture, race, colour etc. will not be tolerated. Treat others as you would expect to be treated yourself. We are all equals here.

It's a plague! If you have nothing useful to post up, please don't post up anything at all.

Going to the very first page of a forum, and posting something is going to bring you bad reputation. However, if you post something useful, then by all means post it up.

More rules later. Feel free to add

The Is operator is unneeded :p

Oh I do love to be a smart arse, if only there was a magical clause in the "terms of use" contract :p

Capital "M" for Mum and March, don't start sentences with "But" or "And", and you missed the full stop from the last sentence. ;)

You have improved a lot though.

Some friendly messing about is alright, but being serious and causing the recipient some grief, then you are causing harm and it is seriously advised you stop.

Southern pansies :)

*waits patiently for lots of negative rep*

Everyone likes to feel part of something; i.e. to feel like they belong. And since we are so far away from events in London and hence not really feeling a part of things us Northerners simply found other ways to belog. Whether that be at a local, county or "Northern" level.

Its possible that with time and modern media the North/South divide will shorten and dissapear entirely. But I suspect it will take a couple of generations.

Having spoken to Docbot about such things we're certainly not the only country that has a North/South split.

Even though I'm not from the South I feel the need to call you a 'Great, Northern Bastard' for that comment, as is the default retort for such a statement. :D

Mum doesn't need a capital, and it's perfectly acceptable to start sentences with "but" or "and" in prose. :)

I think you'll find it doesn't actually, it's not a pro-noun.

I think it depends on the context

"His mum has fallen ill" should be lower case "m", as it is, like you say, not a pro-noun.

However when you are talking to someone and refer to them as Mum, you are substituting that title for their name, and it becomes a pro-noun. Therefore, when Gopha responded to Nanor's post with "yes mum", the word Mum, was a pro-noun and should have been capitalised.

It works the same with other wordsthat can be used as a title e.g. doctor
"Let me through I'm a doctor"
compared to
"I went to visit Doctor Docbot today"

I would have said not, but I'm not wholly clear on the matter. I believe the comparison is:

My mum is a doctor.

Mum is a doctor.

"My mum" is about role, not name.

"Mum" is her name, to you.

Anyone care to comment?

The rule is "Names of relationships only when they are a part of or a substitute for a person's name.". So yes, usually there would be a pronoun there before the "mum" if it shouldn't be capitalized.
