I thought this was a joke when I first heard about it. But sounds like it's real? How the hell could something like that work? No electric or light energy.. ergo no energy needed to produce light? I'm no expert but that just sounds impossible.

I'm no scientist either but perhaps it's to do with the say it reflects light - what little there is, maybe >_<

This be bob.

It's a safe emmision of beta radiation, the radiation is contained within the spheres, thus the 12 years is a rough half-life calculation. Electrons are emitted by the source thus the light is emitted.

I believe that is the essence of it anyway

Photoluminescene, yo!

Particles absorb photons of energy (be it infared, UV, whatever), and then re-emit it as photons of energy within the visible spectrum! Or so says wikipedia from reading various articles.

Edit - Damn you and your posting while I type bob! DAMN YOU!!!!

Yup, Beta Radiation. It's damned cheap too!

The cost to light up 8 ½ x 11 piece of plastic 1/8” thick is about .35 cents.

Say good-bye to night time! Can you imagine the photos from space when everything is just neon green? :p

the colour emitted is dependent on the material, meaning it will be possible to make any colour light you want, hence why it is useful for things like torches
