What's your price range? At the sub-£2K mark, you could try a Skoda Felicia; unless it's very old it should be an engine from Volkswagen but without the price tag. Small car, decent visibility, not too expensive to maintain. Lacks style, of course, but that's the way of things I think.

Rojaws ran one for 18 months and thought it was fine, I think. Uninspiring, but fine.
