[Grouping pt1] Fighting effectively in a group

Time for a little tutorial since there are always improvements to be made and you can bet that the alliance guilds are organised enough to make them.

So to avoid getting royally pasted I present some thoughts on working in a group.

Firstly - BE AWARE. You know that twinge of excitement you get when you see that low down dirty night elf out on his own, the adrenalin starts pumping, your vision narrows and you scream "Muhahahahaha die little twinky" whilst running in arms and weapons flailing. Two seconds later your pinned against a tree with a hunters mark on your head and the night elf's pet and friends sharpening their skewers and looking for a tender bit to stick them into.

Being aware covers every facet of a MMORPG. If you're a priest like myself it covers avoiding big sharp implements of death whilst watching my mana reserves and seeing where my healing, shield or shadow damage spells can be most effective. Don't pick one target and don't assume there is only one target to pick. Take your time and in the words of the famous hedgehog - stop, look, listen and LIVE!

Secondly - know your place. By this I mean there is a chain of events that lead to character death. Priests should not be tanks and warriors should not be scouts, likewise scouts can't heal and can only tank moderately well but are lethal when stealthed or revealing opponent positions. These are global truths, be aware of your characters limitations and strength and don't fight them. Trying to prove that your cloth codpiece and your flimsy excuse of a staff can go beat that heavily armoured warrior to a pulp in hand to hand is an excersice in futility, however using your abilities correctly the poor bastard stands no chance (I'll offer examples of effective use in another thread).

Stick together! If you are more than three seconds away from the rest of your group then you (or they) have seriously fucked up. Forget what you are doing and get back to the fold NOW. "Group" ... go look up the dictionary definition, at no point does it mention "he who fooks off looking for glory and honour by himself only to let the rest of his group die due to his incredibly small penis size!". If you don't want to be in the group then leave it, otherwise stick with it. I'd reccomend group leaders get into the habbit of removing people who do this repeatedly - replace them with someone who can work as part of a team and you'll have far more fun.

Finally, add people who are fun to play with to your friends list - invite them into your group when you see them come online and if they are willing then invite them into the guild. Building an effective team takes the right kind of people so keep note of who they are when you find them.

Yep, I agree with all that.

Let me add a few further thoughts, which are more extensions to Haven's comments rather than entirely new lines:

  • He who prances gets killed for sure -- if you're weak, under attack and your group is right there with you then stand still. As you run around it makes it harder for people to heal you, get to you to give support, target your opponent... basically, you save yourself around two seconds life against a decent PvPer by prancing and you'll still die, where if you stood and took it then your team might actually save you. Fine, there are times to maneuver, but know that you are moving for a reason... don't make that your default action under fire.
  • Get helper mods -- (doubly so for healer, anti-debuffer classes such as Priests and Mages) you can be sure that your opponents are using every helpful mod available and they're using them for the sole purpose of killing you and your group to humiliation. Check out our [thread=1028]Recommended Mods[/thread] and pick up ones such as cEasyHealer, Decursive... anything that will allow you a quick way of seeing who you can help. They aren't cheating (you can bet that Blizzard would have banned them if they were!) so don't cripple yourself in the name of purism.
  • In battlegrounds, kill the pet's owner, not the pet -- Hunters and Warlocks will attack you with their pets hoping to do you damage and confuse you while they sit back and laugh. However, in a battleground, when they die their pet vanishes too. Don't waste your time on the pet, whose sole purpose is to prevent you destroying their cohesion... kill the owner!

I'll add more as I remember them.

I'll tank and fuck around vs mobs for the fun of it (mobs are dumb and predictable so I can get away with it ... most of the time :)). But vs Alliance you wont see me doing any of that crap and if you do you have my permission to kick me from the group :)

Follow up thread.

Use natural defences! - For example, if you happen to be defending the town of Tarren Mill with a group of level 40's and perhaps one or two high levels whilst the rest are all 60's in epic kits, use those bloody guards. They may not be the most effective, but if you can get half a dozen or so attacking then that swings the balance majorly towards you!

If you happen to see a massive tower, like in Hillsbrad, use that! It'll give you cover from hunters, giving you time to heal or give orders!
