I apologise for the length, if you aren't that bothered skip to the large red chunk at the end for a summing up chunk
Yesterday in an impulse move while in HMV I bought world tour mostly because I wanted the guitar but also because it was much cheaper than everywhere else. Got the guitar and the game for £55 so figured why not. I also wanted to get a guitar for a possible future purchase of RB2 so I shall start talking about the guitar.
It looks really good feels pretty smooth and seems like they have incorporated some of what they were going for with the lump on the strummer from RB. However on this guitar they have hit the lumpiness spot on making it not so much a clicking little waste of space but has actually in only 6 hours of playing made my up/down strumming much improved.
The tracklist thus far (there are some surprises that aren't on the list on the back of the pack) has been pretty damn awesome. There, like all GH and RB games is some definite padding and chaff around that middle area however (although I want to break Ted Nugents legs from making a song that is over 8mins long where the bass line changes once) even the meh songs that I'd not normally listen to paramore for example have some really nice sections that make them very bareable and ultimately very very enjoyable. This makes the awesome songs that little bit more awesome as I haven't found yet that I'm grinding through chaff to get back to the good stuff. This isn't to say the chaff isn't there and if you don't like tool then the 3 song tool gig is going to hurt you but it has been done in such a way as to much the chaff actually enjoyable.
There are only two really big changes of note one is the open note on the bass line. Me and my housemate Ski were both shocked and appalled at first that I had to route out the manual that had been excitedly discarded by yours truly in a desperate attempt to start to ROOOOOCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!!
However having discovered that the open note was this purple bar across the middle of the bass essentially given the bass an additional fret/thing to think about. At first I thought "great here they go trying to make the bass less dull YAWN, nice try now moving on". Ski and I were taking it in turns gig for gig switching between lead and bass to keep it fun. However we have found that switching isn't that important as although again there are some songs where the bass part is like watching Trax state the obvious funny at first but after 5mins you just want to brain him with the controller and move on (sorry mate was going to go with paint drying but this fitted better). They have on the most part got the bass spot on, the use of the open note really adds somet to tracks and can actually make what would be really simple bass lines freaking awesome. The bass fits so snuggly with the lead as well that you really feel that real care has been put into making it that good. All in all me and Ski played for 6hours straight with only one break and although yes we are massive GH geeks, yes we can play it all (thus far) on expert the only reason we stopped is because he had the claw and my right wrist started refusing to move up and down anymore. Ski is a useful person to play with as he has completed GH3 on expert so is just insanely good to a point that isn't even funny. So to sum up this little section bass tres good. Just playing with 2 people no longer leaves one waiting for their next chance to rip into a juicy solo.
The slidy tap bar thing, it's shit and a waste of time they are just hammer ons play them on the frets as per usual. NUFF said.
Bottom line if like D you have already got RB1/2 with all the bits then this is probably not worth it as you are already sorted. As I say I bought this thinking meh £55 for a guitar and I have a game as well and am ready to get RB2 at some point I have been well impressed, the game looks crisp everything is a bit shinier, they have put real thought and effort into every gig scenery as well as real effort into the gig song lists so that the encores fairly well suit what you've been playing in that gig to that point.
They have changed the structure a bit so you aren't just stuck with the same 4 songs that you have to play next. You get a choice so you aren't going to end up with just raining blood left wishing you were able to finish the damn game (I'm not bitter at all). I've not completed it yet so I may regret saying that but hey. My only annoyance is every character has crazy thin emo legs. I am Lars Umualt. He is fat chunky and a bit scary looking, in this even he has crazy thin drainpipe legs. It's a travesty. The char creature is pretty detailed so for those who want to spend hours creating a char you can. It's not as simple as easy to use as the RB one but the options are pretty diverse.
So to conclude great set list great additions to the bass part and all in all well impressed with the whole game that I have seen so far except the emo legs. If you've not got RB and you want a bit of GH fun then this for me is hitting all the right buttons. A well polished game that looks good and plays even better
