So, I found the Collector's Edition of both Guild Wars: nightfall and factions dirt cheap - they are on their way as we speak. Was impatient and bought prophecies online in the meantime, and started a ranger/mes last night.

Should I play her through to level 20 in prophecies, or is there added benefit to installing the others once they arrive? Will it just cause confusion if I install them before finishing all the vanilla content?

The Demanding Gamer(i.e: me) shall answer your questions!

As I have all three episodes of GW(Not the expansion), for my part there were no confusions there. You might have a shared stash for all three episodes. But that stuff is easy to sort(At least it was shared when I played). But that makes it easier to transfer funds between your characters.
Helped me form a guild, emblem and cape by transferring between characters, so.

I hope this answers your questions :)

Factions and Nightfall add some skills that are very useful, however you need to reach Lions Arch before you can travel to either Cantha (Factions), Elona (Nightfall), or into the North with EotN from Tyria(Prophecies).

Factions will see you at lvl 20 by the time you hit the mainland and can travel to the other continents and i can't really speak for Nightfall as i only got the collectors edition at Christmas and havn't had a chance to get into it

I now own all parts of GW and think i am guild head of THN at the moment. I'm looking to get back into playing some more so feel free to give me a shout i'm sure i have a couple of characters who can lend a hand if you want :)

The thing that confuses me is it sounds like all three games are standalone and levels 1-20. So do you level a character in each? Or play through all three with one even though you'll hit the cap before you finish Prophecies?

it's really up to you, there are 3 stand-alone stories but you can move characters between them once you hit a certain stage, EotN is an expansion and is accessible to all characters once you reach the stage you can cross over into the other campaigns.

if you want to start characters who have a main profession from Factions (Assassin/Ritualist) or Nightfall(Dervish/Paragon) you will have to start them on that campaign.

personally i have finished prophecies with one character, done half of it on hard mode with them, almost finished Factions, completed EotN and most of EotN hard mode

Factions is best, in my opinion. You get heroes -easy- and having cusomizeable heroes makes a big difference to spamming Henchmen.

well Factions > Nightfall is easiest so in a way yes, however the EotN heroes are nice as they start at lvl20 :)
