[GW2] GW2 can it last?

Yes I am here to talk about xfire's stats, at the moment, they stand as

♦ Guild Wars 2 (52.9%)

♦ World of Warcraft (13.9%)

♦ Star Wars: The Old Republic (3.2%)

I have never seen such a change in such a short period of time. GW2 has favourable reviews, amazon have sold out.

The big question is "will it last?" Yes the game only has a one off payment and no subscription fee but I actually see that as a negative and potentially a warning. Why should they continue to support it in say 4 years time after the developers have pretty much got all the money they are going to get. Does anyone play GW1 now? get my point?

I am pretty sure wow will still be here in 4 years (loving the new x64 bit client). I think blizzard have a good balance of marketing and finance to ensure their product lasts. Eve lasts too albeit on a smaller scale with a similar model.

Agree/disagree/debate?

I dont know about 4 years, guild wars 1 came out in 2005, and then 7 years later they released GW2, whats to stop them from releasing guild wars 3 in 4 years?
Is it even fair to compare it with a subscription game, i mean both can be played by the same person with no increase in cost to the player monthly.

Graphics are not everything and i hope GW2 has more to offer than that.

Is your point that people are not playing guild wars 1 because it has ancient inferior (yet enjoyable) graphics, or that its been played to death and they want the same users to pay again?

Rather than longevity its my opinion that we should focus on how it innovates the genre?

That said, i rolled a necromancer, its far too much work to be fun

People very much still play the original Guild Wars. The great thing about a lack of subscription fee (and a lot of the game being single player) is you can always dip back into it any time you feel like, without feeling like you're gambling with your money.

Every time I consider going back to an old MMO, I have to weigh up whether I'll get my money's worth for even a single month's subscription fee - or whether I'd be better off with a whole new game for the same price.

Guild Wars 2 won't have that % in 4 years time. Hell, it won't have it in 4 weeks time. GW1 was supported the last 7 years, so I doubt they'll 'cut off' GW2 just because "they made their money's worth". Just doesn't sound likely at all.

Read this as every time I get that urge to play Runescape ^

NCSoft don't drop games, as seen with their monthly sub MMOs they pass them on to another company to maintain them on a free to play model which cuts what you can do if you're not paying the sub still.

While, overall, I agree with the sentiments that GW2 is likely to be supported for years to come and, frankly, if they do declare it done in four years time then I don't doubt that we'd all still have had many times our money's worth from it.

But...

NCSoft don't drop games

... appears not to be true.

I think it's hard and maybe impossible for a company to sustain a MMO subscription free. GW1 came out a year after wow, but it's kinda obvious which game has survived the test of time and I think it's obvious why. Nothing to do with graphics. GW1 just hasn't been added to/supported/upgraded to anywhere near the same extent as wow for the simple reason that the developers don't get a regular subscription fee.

I do think that longevity is important as an MMO is a large investment of time and would hate to invest effort in an MMO only for the developers to decide years down the road they are not supporting it.

If you are happy to play GW2 for a few years only to start the whole thing again in GW3 then that is fine. If Blizzard were to announce wow2, you can probably imagine the uproar of complaint from current players - they expect the game to be sustained for years, maybe even decades and perhaps rightly so because they are paying handsomely for it.

I would love to start playing TOR but can't see that game lasting the test of time so I don't see it as worthwhile playing. I would more likely give EVE another bash (it has a subsciption fee of course and lasted).

We had at least 13 people online tonight, and that's a week night.

Also, there have been at least 3 other big games released in the last couple of weeks, FTL, Borderlands 2 and Baldurs Gate Enhanced to name the ones i've been playing.

In addition, it's the box cost and that's you forever, like GW1, people will get bored of other things and think "ooh i could go give that a look at again" without the whole "i need to re-activate my account, pay for 30 days even if i only end up playing for a week"

I put nearly 4000 hours into the first Guild Wars, and i certainly see myself putting in that amount to GW2

Yeah, just to echo Iron on this one: GW is always a game you fall in and out of love with, and can come back to at any time. I don't expect it to outdo WoW in terms of % playtime - I don't think ANet ever intended for that to happen either. If you compare GW2 to a sub-based MMO like WoW, you only really need to play GW2 for a maximum of 4 months (assuming pre-purchase price) to get your money's worth out of it.
