Hacking a car's ECU

BBC News report that the ECU on a modern car is easy to hack (ECU = Electronic Control Unit).

BBC News said:
"We are able to forcibly and completely disengage the brakes while driving, making it difficult for the driver to stop," wrote the researchers. "Conversely, we are able to forcibly activate the brakes, lurching the driver forward and causing the car to stop suddenly."

The hacks require physical access to the car's data ports, but I guess it would be relatively trivial to create a GSM unit that plugged into those ports that would allow remote control of a car via mobile internet...

Colour me rather perturbed.

I read that article yesterday. Amused me somewhat.

Dunno how hard it is to jimmy open a bonnet on a car without setting the alarm off.

Although some people have been stealing catalytic converters from c8's lately in supermarket carparks. :S

strange.
