Half-Life 2: Episode 1 Review

Ok so I've just finished play Half-Life 2: Episode 1 (After only downloading it 1 maybe 2 days ago). So in this thread I intend to review the 1st of valve's Half-Life 2 episodes. This is my first real game review so I hope it isn't to bad for you guys :p.

I will be talking about the plot of the game, but I'll try to refrain from talking about the major events and so will try not to ruin it for you.

Episode 1 pretty much starts off where HL2 ended. If you don't remember the ending of HL2: You and Alex are in the citadel and it is beginning to explode after the fusion reactor has become borked :p.

The only thing that is quite annoying is that there are no answers to the very last cut scene of HL2. If you remember time stopped and the G-man came out of no where. He congratulates Gordon and talks about employing you as a sort of time warp agent and then all of a sudden you are back at the citadel. As I say there are no answers to this in Episode 1 and instead you wake up underneath a pile of rubble to be greeted by Alex and Dog.

It is nice to see that the character of Dog has been continued in the series as it injects some humour into the game and just makes it a bit more fun to play. Anyway you are told that:

The citadel is collapsing and you must evacuate City 17.

This is the main aim and plot of the whole game. I must say I kept on waiting for something to happen that changes the plot and makes it a bit more interesting but I'm afraid to say that it never came.

I'm not really going to go on and talk about all the chapters in the game as that will definitely ruin the game for you but instead I will focus on new or old feature etc that are implemented in the game.

The one really big difference in this game is that you constantly have the company of Alex. I have mixed views on having Alex follow you about through out the whole game. On the one hand it's nice to have some company and some help when you get to the really hard bits in the game, however on the other hand she does get quite annoying. There are times in the game where she blocks the hell out of you and its god damn frustrating, and then there are others where you have to wait for here to catch up to you before you can get on to the next part of the game due to here having to talk to you or having to unlock a door for you. Alex also seems to be invincible and have unlimited ammo and so sometimes it's just easier for you to let her take over and shoot everything that comes near you.

Valve have kept the great problem solving aspect in the game, and there are many a time when you have to use the gravity gun to find some sort of flotation device or to somehow power something up etc.

On to weapons now, and as I have stated above the Gravity Gun is used a fair bit during the game, for puzzles and for fighting. I am pretty disappointed that there was no new weapons introduced into this game and you are lumped with the same bog standard weapons as in the Half-Life 2. All I can hope is that there will be some new weapons introduced in the next few episodes.

In addition to the new weapons there are not very many new enemies introduced. The one new enemy introduced is quite clever as it is a combine zombie who loves to suicide bomb you with a grenade! I am not too worried about new enemies not being introduced as in the clip for episode 2 at the end of the game, it seems that there is going to be a lot of newer enemies in episodes 2 and 3. The combines in episode 1 also seem to be slightly smarter in the sense that they hide behind things a lot more and abseil down buildings.

One problem with episode 1 is that because you are trying to escape from City 17 most of the scenery is the same and you can't help but shake the feeling of Deja vu every 2 minutes, although this is to be expected as you are trying to escape from the city you started in, in Half-Life 2.

There are also supposed to be graphical differences in Episode 1 as well as improvements to the source engine, though I never really noticed much of a difference (It is only certain graphics cards that support it, and I don?t really know if mine did or not :S).

The preview (at the end of episode 1...) for episode 2 looks very impressive indeed. The plot looks much more thrilling and action packed and I presume that there is going to be a lot more enemies and action involved in it. It is done like a movie trailor and not a cut scene and so looks very nice :).

I must admit at some points in episode one I was a bit bored, and at some other parts I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Overall I thought Half-Life 2 episode 1 was a good game and Valve have integrated all the good features of the previous Half-Life's and have made some good improvements to the game, However there are certain points in the game that are just too similar to Half-Life 2. It is also worth mentioning that it is very short with only maybe 5 hours playing time, give or take an hour. However this is to be expected for one episode and only paying 10 or 15 quid for it.

I would defiantly recommend that people buy this game, especially if you're a big fan of the HL series. It is also worth mentioning that you do not have to own Half-Life 2 to be able to play this game, although if you do not own HL2 I would advise you play it before this one :).

Well that's me, First ever real game review. Hope you enjoyed it :).

Thats a lot of SHITE!

(LoL Its better when its spooken :D)

I loved Half life 2, I love it, i love it, I love it!

And Episode one i felt was just as good maybe even better :D I enjoyed all the new enemies and characters likes the stalkers (OoooW Scary :p)

The thing about new weapons is, The game is just continuing on from HL2 so of course theres not gonna be that many new weapons because he is not magically gonna get a weapon created for him :p And Hey I love the weapons Cant go wrong with a big pump handle shotgun! I loved the new idea how to stop the bugs very smart made me have greater enjoyment

The Story line and area is obviously gonna be the same because your escaping the place! Theres not gonna be a huge change in story line and setting that was already known. I enjoyed the story line though, I wont say much more incase i ruin it for people.

Alex, What can you really say. We all know when we get a partner in a game there always gonna be a bugger to work with - DAMN THE AI! I felt she was alot better as a partner though she never got in my way, all she did was steal my kills. DAMN HER!!! She didnt do much else except talk and take the piss out of you :P I thought that just made the game FANTASTIC! But We all love Alex really, even though she can be a biatch at times

I also felt that the game dynamic changed a bit actually. It seemed to be leaning towards the Doom style ( 3D one not the 2D pan cake face monsters :p) The more dark and sinester style of everything in the dark and you have to use your flash light sparingly if you sprint about like a Whippet which i did :D Which i enjoyed very much. Its great when a game scares you, its fun owning some monsters but it can get a bit dull at times. So getting scared is good casue look at F.E.A.R. Graphically i felt it was utter PISH! storyline was dodgy at points but i loved when the little girl came up and scared you when you were climbing a ladder and got to the top of it to see her  So a good scare can make a game i feel gives you reason to play it

Graphics on Half Life 2 when it came out were the cream of the crop and episode 1 has kept that going. There arent huge changed but that was expected think about the time they have brought this game out there not gonna make huge changes.

The hole idea of not really giving the bigger picture i love :D I like the idea that you can have different view points from people of how it might actually be like. Thats why i loved The Matrix but when they brought out 2 and 3 it fell short i felt and ruined it for me :( So either they have to keep it a secret forever or have a HUGE AMAZINGLY TANTILIZING way to explain everything. Id love to know myself but i dont want them to rush and explain it all and its a disappointment because then i might lose my great love for this game :D

The games a bit short as Macca said but its only an episode so its not gonna be long its leaves you in suspence Which is great i think. Not much else to say about the length

There are my thoughts of Half-Life 2: Episode 1. Good continuation of the game, You can keep playing it and have commentary which also makes you want to complete it again so you can hear everything. FANTASTIC GAME GO OUT AND BUY IT NOW!!!!!

Superb game cant wait for the next install meant, O yeah you have to finish it to see the Trailer for Episode 2 which looks like there gonna be a lot more twists to the tail of Gordan Freeman

I know that it is just continuing from HL2 but I did expect perhaps 1 or 2 new weapons to be introduced. You say that there isn't going to be a new weapon created for him but it could have been introduced in another way such as it could have been picked up by a combine, or it could have been found in the citadel, or even the big fusion reactor could have changed certain atributes of one of you guns you already have.

As I said I didn't expect the overall story line to change too much, but I did expect it to be shaped a bit more through the events and challenges you encounter in the game.

I would deffinatly agree with you on that one. There are certain points in the game where you have to use the flashlight a lot, and it's sometimes quite like Doom 3 in that respect, although I wouldn't say that it is as scary as Doom 3 or F.E.A.R.

Intresting to hear your alternative views though :).

In Cryo Sleep
I just finished Episode 1 today too.

Some of it was very intense (The elevator scene and the final boss fight come to mind) but a few parts seemed like stuff they needed for the story but couldn't find a way to fit in with the rest of the game.

I enjoyed the dark sections of the game, but I found the repetive antlion hole plugging dull after a while. The combine encounters were still engaging though.

The new zombie is pretty neat, and I can't wait to see what those 3 legged things in episode 2 can do. Although the stalkers were underused, in my opinion. They recieved so much emphasis in the trailers, but after the 1st chapter you never see them again.

Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to episode 2.

From what you've been saying, it seems like a pretty solid buy (loads of internet sites agree too). Just wondering though, do all of you who have it reckon that buying Epi 1 as a standalone was the best choice? I'm not sure how I feel about making a purchase and then finishing it in a single night/sitting, no matter how retina scorchingly great it is, in which case grabbing the combined pack of all 3 episodes (also the equivalent of a full game) seems like the much better option when/if they release it. The game itself sounds fine and if they kept all the goodness from the original (which they undoubtedly have) then it's all fine and dandy, but i'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the creation and rise of episodic gaming.

I think if you have not played Half-life 2 then you should buy that now before you play any of these further episodes. However to your original question, I don't see the harm in waiting and buying them all at the once and then playing them, although you will have to wait for quite a while.

I personally prefer doing as I did - Downloading the one episode justnow and then wait for the other episodes. Mainly because you can play it justnow, but also because you see the preview of episode 2 and have something to look foward to :).

Not worth the $20. Not by a long shot. Way too short, way too scripted, and way too repetitive.

I've already played through EP1 twice and it's worth every penny, i will defenetly be buying EP2 an EP3.

Valve wins again

well If you think about it $20 isnt that much for a small game. Thats like 11 or 12 pounds and if you compare that a full game that would probably cost ?30. You have to remember with this being the first in the episodes - that this is probably going to be the slowest in terms of them having to set the story.

$20 is a lot of money for something that is moderately fun for 3 hours, never to be played again.
